  2. What is the Community Health Engagement Program? It is a component of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), funded from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Indiana University in collaboration with Purdue and Notre Dame, hascreated CHEP to help assist researchers in translating research findings to the Indiana community by engaging the community to participate in research opportunities.

  3. Our Mission Promote collaboration among community partners throughout Indiana to improve research, health and healthcare. CHEP has a consortium of over 200 community partnersthat comprise our Community Advisory Council (CAC).

  4. CAC Partners: Clarian Health BioCrossroads Cook Group Roche Wellpoint Indiana Economic Development Corp Indiana Department of Health Marion County Health Department YMCA of Greater Indianapolis Fairbanks Institute for Healthy Communities Indiana Commission for Women Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis March of Dimes And many more........

  5. Addressing community needs Bringing Hoosiers into translational research

  6. Translational Research The process in which life science discoveries in the laboratory are transformed into medical treatments, products, behavioral interventions. Why is it important? “To improve human health and wellness, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications.”

  7. Traditional Translational Research Translational Research with CHEP It's purely biomedical, bridging the gap between bench science and the clinic Taking an innovative scientific idea from the lab, through clinical testing, then into clinics and the community, so that community health can be improved

  8. To develop a therapy that's effective and widely implemented, scientists need to understand the people who might benefit from it and figure out the best way to place that treatment in the context of their lives and communities. Community organizations play a significant role in this process by partnering with scientists and researchers.

  9. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) • focuses on relationshipsbetween academic and community partners, with principles of: • co- learning • mutual benefit • long-term commitment • CBPR incorporates: • community theories • participation • culture and practices into the researchefforts.

  10. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)integrates collaboration, education and social action to improve health andreduce health disparities. Community based research/ partnering with academia Community education CHEP Community health and wellness Community service and social action

  11. How can CHEP help you? COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES CHEP organizes forums to strengthen collaborations between community and academia. CONSULTATION SERVICES CHEP assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of community engaged research protocols. EDUCATION AND TRAINING CHEP hosts a series of community workshops, discussions and presentations. CHEP also creates a mechanism for disseminating results of community research studies to help educate community and inform policy. ACCESS TO PARTNERS CHEP provides community members access to a network of over 200 local community partners and researchers, including underserved populations who are interested in project collaboration. PROMOTION OF COMMUNITY EVENTS CHEP helps community partners become aware of community events and opportunities.

  12. As a community member, participating in research can… • Identify and measure problems relevant to your community stakeholders • • Assist your organization in accomplishing your mission to improve the health of your stakeholders • • Learn more about issues that affect your community • • Make stronger arguments to leaders about issues you care about • • Bring new medical treatments, better doctors, more jobs and services to you, your family and your community • • Improve the health of people at risk in your community

  13. What would the people in your community identify as the most pressing health issue facing your community?

  14. Major Health Care Challenges in Indiana • Access to Care • Asthma • Dental Health • Diabetes • Immunizations • Infant Health • Injury and Violence Prevention • Lead Poisoning • Mental Health • Overweight and Obesity • Sexually Transmitted Infections (Community assessment report, 2008, United Way of Central Indiana)

  15. CHEP will connect community organizations with advanced preventive research efforts such as: • The Oral Health Research Institute • The Otis R. Bowen Research Center

  16. A successful community-based participatory research (Diabetes Prevention Program) • The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is “a promising practice that should be advanced.” • A 58% reduction in the development of new cases of diabetes was achieved as a result of the DPP. • The DPP was more successful than medication in reducing the development of new cases of diabetes. • Exercising

  17. Diabetes Prevention Program in the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis has partnered with the IU School of Medicine to adapt the DPP to community-based settings. The program has been simplified to make administration and monitoring easier for participants and community-based agencies. CHEP can advance that even further by partnering with other community -based organizations and attract other interested researchers.

  18. Your community organization can help by partnering with CHEP… bysharing key information more effectively through collaborative events to help inform researchand policy in order to improve the health of Indiana citizens AND by communicating your events and opportunities

  19. "You don't get a whole lot of understanding when you're engaged in parallel play in a sandbox. It's when you're playing together that you create something that's greater than the sum of your individual contributions." –Lawrence Palinkas,
