Association of Australian and New Zealand road and road transport authorities • Membership: • All 8 Australian states and territories road agencies • Australian Government • Local Government by national association • New Zealand Transport Agency • Purpose: • Undertake research • Produce guidelines • Coordinate international involvement

  3. Austroads international activities • Manages Australia’s involvement with World Road Association on behalf of national government • Maintains collaboration agreements with similar organisations eg AASHTO • Organises study tours • Provides secretariat for Australian Chapter of REAAA

  4. Australian + New Zealand national committee • In 2012 enter into MoU with WRA to be recognised as the National Committee for Australia and New Zealand • New Zealand and Australia are both independently members of WRA

Activities:Technical Committees • Coordinates participation in technical committees • Represented on 15 of the 17 committees • Secretaries for 6 • Chairs for 2 • Supports 50% of TC rep travel costs • Distributes information from technical committees to Australian and NZ road agencies and available on Austroads website • Include information on WRA activities in regular newsletters

Activities:Other Essay competition in relation to World Road Congress: • Conducted national level competition • Several essays submitted to int’l competition • Sponsored the Road Safety prize • Participated in jury assessing essays Arranges young professionals study tours • Traffic management, Europe 2005 • Asset management, North America 2006 • Road safety, Europe 2008 • Registration and licensing 2010 • C-ITS, Europe & USA 2014

  9. Activities:Other Participation in commissions • Communications Commission – chair in last cycle • Strategic Planning • Provides editorial support for Routes Roads and material for NC newsletter

  10. Activities:Other • From 2003 to 2011 provided secondments of technical advisers to WRA secretariat of 9-12 months duration • Promotes and coordinates participation in World Road Congresses

  11. Issues • Need to have wider engagement with the road industry in Australia and New Zealand – especially private sector and academia • Roads Australia is broader based industry organisation • Exploring closer collaboration to utilise their networks
