  2. The trick in not getting angry is not losing your temper. Greet everyone with a smile and salutation each morning.

  3. Always focus on the big picture. Your rules apply to you, too.

  4. Good leaders are like baseball umpires: They go practically unnoticed when doing their job right. Anticipate chaos and be prepared to work through it.

  5. Always keep in mind that what others tell you is only the tip of the iceberg. Trust your gut feeling; it’s usually right.

  6. Remember that “silent” and “listen” contain the same letters. Expect people to perform only as well as the example you set.

  7. Leaders are willing to swim upstream. Share your joy with others.

  8. Be willing to laugh at yourself. Be teachable; you don’t know everything.

  9. Provide the sky in which others can soar. An in-person visit beats a written memo every time.

  10. Leaders perform for results, not recognition. Leaders see more in others than others see in themselves.

  11. True leadership involves not only the exercise of authority but also full acceptance of responsibility. Goals are Dreams with Deadlines.

  12. Before you critique another’s behavior, list five positive things about that person.
