  2. Progress/results Objective 1: literature review One graduate student has been working on the annotated bibliography of research on policy/governance linkages to sustainable agriculture and natural resource management. Published works have been reviewed and approximately 50 entries have been added to the meta-database.

  3. Progress/results Objective 2: identify “state-of-the art” We are not focusing on state of the art projects, per se, but rather trying to characterize “best bet” policies based on a review of the literature. Conceptual problem: more “bad” examples than “good” examples

  4. Markets that support SA & NRM Institutions that support SA & NRM Better Good Good Best Better Better Good Technologies that support SA & NRM

  5. Progress/resultsObjective 3: develop case studies Four case studies have been identified: 1. Impact of major governmental polices (such as tax exemptions, special tax incentives, land allocation rules, and agricultural credit) on deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.2. The effect of Indonesia’s economic crisis on small farmer well-being, agricultural practices, and natural forest cover. 3. The impact of lowland agricultural intensification on upland activities in the Philippines.4. Price and input incentives and arid land management in Morocco. 2. -
