  1. Field of View Seeing More of Less Microworlds Lesson 7

  2. Think & Wonder • One of the things you have been learning about a little at a time in this unit is something called the field of view. • When working with water drops, for example, you were able to magnify one section of newsprint from a newspaper. • What you saw through the water drop was in your field of view. * field of view

  3. Think & Wonder • The same is true of the magnifying glass and the microscope. • Whatever you can see through them all at once is called your field of view. • Let’s get better acquainted with our microscope’s field of view and learn how to measure it. • You might invent ways to measure the tiny things you see within your field of view. *

  4. Discussion Imagine a puppy….. • How much could I see with just my eyes? • How much would I see using a hand lens? • How much if I were using a microscope? *

  5. Discussion • Think about the title of this lesson again Field of View: Seeing More of Less • Explain to a partner what this means. • Write your explanation in your LRB. *

  6. Power of Lens Field of View • The field of view is defined as the space or area in which things can be seen through the lens of a microscope. • Each time thepower of a lens is increased, thefield of view is decreased. • So while we are seeing an object in greater detail, we also are seeing less of it. *

  7. Micrometer • The unit used for measuring microscopic objects is called a micrometer. • The symbol for micrometer is um. • A micrometer is .001 mm, or one-thousandth (1/1000) of a millimeter or one millionth (1/1,000,000) of a meter. * micrometer

  8. Micrometer • Most human hair measures 60 micrometers across. Many micro organisms are MUCH smaller than that. diameter

  9. Lab bag containing: Wire screen Burlap Yarn Pencil Shavings 1 microscope Activity Sheet 5, Field of View 1 hair 1 piece of microfiche 1 flat slide Water dropper bottle Pieces of newspaper 1 pair of scissors Materials

  10. Final Activity • Complete Activity Sheet 5. • Cut and glue your activity sheet in your LRB. • Return all materials

  11. Update your Table of Contents
