  1. 1 GOES I/M Product Assurance Plan (GIMPAP) - FY 2006 Enhanced utilization of GOES I/M Contribution from: the NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory Participants: Bob Rabin NOAA/NSSL and CIMSS University of Wisconsin

  2. 2 GOES I/M Product Assurance Plan (GIMPAP) - FY 2006 Contribution from: the NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory Main project goal: Develop applications to enhance utilization of GOES I/M in conjunction with Doppler radar & other data sources for the detection and forecasting of hazardous weather.

  3. 3 TAC Guidance from 2005 1) Emphasize techniques that have the most potential to be transitioned into operational forecast systems (AWIPS,N-AWIPS, WDSS-II 2) Continue coordination on new severe weather index with CIRA 3) Continue collaboration with CIMSS on fire work and ORA-STAR on precipitation validation. 4) Coordinate with MDL GIMPAP project to transfer WDSS-II applications to SCAN 5) Contribute to training efforts where possible.

  4. Major Accomplishments • Applications of GOES fire detection at the SPC • http://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/firecomp • http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/~rabin/fire • Incorporation of existing satellite algorithms into NMQ and PAW • http://nmq.ou.edu/~qpeverif/Experimental • Real-time GOES imagery into WDSS • Estimating precipitation efficiency (dendritic ice growth) using GOES sounder products • http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/~rabin/dendritic1.html • Continued processing and archival of mesoscale satellite winds http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/mesoscale_winds • Real-time processing and and archival of convective overshoot http://overshoot.nssl.noaa.gov/ • Web-based tool for storm tracking: real-time and archival http://tracker.nssl.noaa.gov/ 4

  5. 5 Operational Transition Aspects • Evaluation of precipitation efficiency and mesoscale winds by the NESDIS Synoptic Analysis Branch (SAB) for future use. • Assisted the NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in the acquisition and assessment of new products (mesoscale winds, fires, surface wetness, etc). • Products being used by forecasters in N-AWIPS to provide national guidance for severe weather and fire weather outlooks. • Collaboration with NWS Office of Hydrological Development: Incorporation of Satellite rainfall products into National Multi- sensor QPE (NMQ). • Incorporation of GOES imager data into next generation Warning Decision Support System (WDSS) at NSSL.
