  1. Draft report on Ris community priorities Saverio vicario – On Behalf WP2 Team (CNR and CA)

  2. Draft report on RI community priorities • WP2 is meant to: • bring together the communities of global research infrastructures (with different cultures and perspectives); • to integrate users’ needs in common priorities; • to develop a common vision • The main expected outputs are to liaise the global RIs and to support developing a common Roadmap (addressing interoperability bottlenecks and solutions) • This work was supported by: • Co-sponsoring and participation to the GBIC in July 2012, Copenhagen • A survey among all liaised Ris • The 3rd workshop in Kunming, China (April 2013)

  3. Table of Contents(draft report “Services for the Biodiversity Community) • Introduction • State of the art • Ten years vision – RIs expectations • Examples of best practices • Interoperability opportunities • Use cases • How to come to a catalogue of capabilities (not yet available) • Sustainability options (not yet available) • Gaps analysis and final recommendations (not yet available)

  4. Survey • The key infrastructure services required by the scientific communities are: • ecological data • analysis capabilities • modelling supporting land management. • For societal needs, the main requirement is: • decision-support tools for decision makers. • The main technical requirement for research infrastructures is: • technology supporting data sharing and interoperability. • The main barriers to the use of the e- infrastructures by scientists are related to: • the digital divide • Unavailable data • Unreliable/Untrusted data • The main barriers for public administrations and citizens to utilizing e- infrastructures on biodiversity and ecosystem services are: • their lack of knowledge • their poor perception of biodiversity. • RIs agree that their support for developing policy-relevant research requires the collaboration of scientists and decision makers in framing the appropriate research questions. • All the RIs partners of the CReATIVE-B project consider well-integrated citizen science activities to be vital for monitoring and research.

  5. Main topics from Kunming Risin their social context Raising awareness Data quality Integration of data sets Common legal and financial implications Commercial use Citizen science

  6. GBIO: the 20 building Blocks of the RI community

  7. Putting GBIO in Ris social context

  8. Reframing GBIO and matching with KuNming Issue Raising awareness Data quality Integration of data sets Common legal and financial implications Commercial use Citizen science ?

  9. Matching with Survey Issue The key services : • ecological data • analysis capabilities • modelling supporting land management. For societal needs: • decision-support tools for decision makers. The ICT topic: • data sharing • interoperability. barriers for scientists : • the digital divide • Unavailable data • Unreliable/Untrusted data The main barriers for others: • their lack of knowledge • their poor perception of biodiversity. ?

  10. Orphan Issues • Financial issue, budget plan • Commercial issues • Decision-support tools for decision makers • Digital divide among scientists

  11. Orphan issues need a social context Research Climate community share data with the commercial meteo community by keeping raw data in the public domain Potential Commercial Space Funding issue reside in the interplay with policy makers and professionals Digital divide of scientist? Tool for decision makers could done by professionals not scientist

  12. Use Cases:I)HABITAT VULNERABILITY TO ALIEN SPECIES • Collect checklist or survey on natural communities • Collect information on Alien-ness of species in different geographical context with predefined temporal criteria • Collect information of invasiveness of species in the surveyed community • Classify communities based on abiotic factors (define habitat) • Spot correlation between habitat/abiotic factors and presence/dominance of species with alien/invasive status • The main GBIO blocks that will be activated are: • Integrated occurrence data • traits data (key is the local definition with gloval implication of alien and invasive traits) • trend and predictions

  13. Use CaseS: II) EBV • Starting from whitepaper on Essential Biodiversity Variable RIs select the ones on which that could contribute • There are 6 classes (22 EBVs): • genes • species population • species traits • community composition • ecosystem function • ecosystem structure Biomass? Interactions? Biomass?

  14. How to proceed with the report? • Complete the action to reframe GBIO within CreativeB WP2 report • each RI should should position herself within this plan, specifying if RI could participate with its actual, underwork or planned capabilities • Define the use case • Finally this plan need to be linked to WP3 and WP4 reports • An expanded draft in the Wiki allow you to contribute. • (http://creative-b.eu/group/guest/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Community+Engagement+Road+Map) Rome Editing report meeting the 17-19 or 24-26 of february. Room is available on both slot
