  1. How do I choose a preschool for my child? Choosing a preschool for your child can seem like such an overwhelming task. Ask for referrals. Talk with your pediatrician or close friends to get their opinions. Ask them specific questions about a preschool program's philosophy, reputation, teaching staff, and curriculum. Once you've narrowed the search down, it's time to visit the schools. The key to choosing the right preschool is going into the process prepared. Prepared? Yes, prepared with a solid idea of what you want your child to gain from his or her preschool experience. Finding a quality preschool or child care provider can be daunting. Here are some tips that will help you find the right preschool for your child's needs. 1. Take referrals Talk with your paediatrician or close friends to get their opinions. Ask them specific questions about a preschool program's philosophy, reputation, teaching staff, and curriculum. Once you've narrowed the search down, it's time to visit the schools. 2. Understand the curriculum Philosophies and curricula vary widely from one preschool to another. Look for a preschool curriculum that offers rich content, hands-on learning, and developmentally-appropriate play. Does the curriculum address fostering social and emotional development as well as academics? Children should be actively engaged in learning. 3. Visit the outdoor space. Outdoor play has taken a back seat to academics in recent years. This trend, which began in elementary schools, is trickling down to preschools. Yet, children's needs haven't changed and outdoor play is still as important as ever. Make sure your preschool provides plenty of time for outdoor play and exposure to nature. 4. Safety Ask the preschool director about the school’s emergency plans, as well as the teacher-student ratios. Take a look at the playground while you’re touring, too. 5. Communication regarding your child. Find out how individual teachers communicate with parents. It could be via daily notes, weekly emails, or communication apps. Remember there’s no one “right” way, but it’s important to keep the classroom connected to the home.
