  2. Role of CNMO • Work across all 7 divisions of the dept. • Internal consultant on nursing and midwifery • Direct advice to ministers • Significant but indirect financial influence

  3. Reform agenda – main principles • Addressing inequality • Easing transitions between care locations • Improving quality and quality assurance • Best public/private balance • Health promotion and prevention focus • Workforce strategies

  4. Role expansion – why expected • Health reform agenda focused on primary care • Changes in disease patterns and demographics • Changing definitions of quality

  5. Historical barriers to NPs working at full scope of practice • lack of MBS and PBS access • a complex regulatory system around the country • a small current workforce, and • resistance from other professions

  6. NRAS • Begins 1 July 2010 • 10 health professions covered initially • Four other professions by 1 July 2012. • Appointments to the 10 new national boards have been announced • Domain will bewww.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au

  7. NRAS benefits • ensure a consistent national approach to the NP workforce • improve workforce mobility • provide clear guidelines as to how nurses can become NPs.

  8. Senate Inquiry into Hearing Services(TORs) • Extent, causes and costs of hearing equipment • Adequacy of access to hearing services • Technologies • Current hearing and research programs • Indigenous issues

  9. Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening Program • COAG Jul 09 – all newborns to be covered by end 2010 • Screening pathways, national min. standards and quality reporting framework well under way • National data set being developed • Consultations soon…

  10. What can I do? • Remember there is much to be proud of! • Acknowledge achievements • Appreciate the flow-on effect of every interaction • Be less cognisant of hierarchy and more cognisant of what we have in common
