  1. Climate How does climate impact life on earth?

  2. Weather vs. Climate “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” “If you don’t like the climate, move”

  3. What affects climate? • Latitude: areas close to the equator have warmest climates • Receive more solar energy per unit of surface area than locations at north or south (rays perpendicular vs ‘spread out’ • Altitude: temperature decreases as altitude increases

  4. What affects climate? • Bodies of water • Specific heat: amount of thermal energy (joules0 needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a material by 1C • Climate along coastlines are constant than in the middle of the continent

  5. Tropical climate • Warm year round • High precipitation • Mild climate: • Warm summers, mild winters • High precipitation • Humid

  6. Polar climate • Cold year round • Minimal precipitation • Continental climate • Warm summers, cold winters • Moderate precipitation • Dry climate • Hot summers, cooler winters • Very low precipitation

  7. Temperature and precipitation • Climograph= a graphical representation of mean annual temperature and precipitation

  8. Adaptations

  9. Adaptations

  10. Adaptations • reduced leaves • thickened waxy cuticle • reduced number of stomata • succulence: stems specialized for water storage maximizes retention of water available during infrequent rains

  11. Today • Read Lesson 1 & 2. Take notes on Lesson 2. • Work on SF project or weather project.
