  3. Reading Workshop Structure • Minilesson: 10-12 minutes • Independent Reading: 15-20 minutes • Mid-workshop Interruption: 3-5 minutes • Partner Reading or Book Clubs: 15-20 minutes • Teaching Share: 5 minutes • Why Reading Workshop?

Architecture of a Mini-lesson • Connection: • Connect today’s lesson with yesterday’s lesson • Connect today’s lesson with ongoing unit of study • Connect today’s lesson with students’ work • Connect today’s lesson with an experience outside of school • Teaching Point: • Present verbally • Demonstrate or model • The teaching point should be mentioned throughout the mini-lesson 5-6 times. • Active Engagement: • Children try out a skill or strategy with a text • Children act like researchers as they watch a demonstration • Children Imagine trying a skill or strategy • Link to ongoing work: • An invitation to try the strategy
