  2. The Beginning • Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait August 1990. • United Nations organized 34 nations • Purpose: to expel Iraq from Kuwait

  3. Getting Involved • President: George H. W. Bush • Sent American troops Saudi Arabia • Urged other countries to send forces • U.S sent most military forces

  4. The Battle Starts • Aerial attack on 17 January 1991 • Commanded: Lieutenant General Chuck Horner • Dropped 88,500 tons of bombs

  5. Solutions • launch a massive air campaign • began codenamed Operation Desert Storm • First priority- Iraqi air force, anti-aircraft facilities. • Launched mostly from Saudi Arabia • Six aircraft carrier battle groups • Persian Gulf and Red Sea

  6. Solutions • Cut off command and communication facilities • Coalition hoped Iraqi resistance would collapse • The third and largest phase- military • Military Targets throughout Iraq and Kuwait • About one-third of airpower was devoted to Scuds

  7. Iraq Attacks Back • Iraq would attack Israel if invaded • Five hours after first attacks, Hussein spoke • "The great duel, the mother of all battles has begun." • Iraq launched eight Scuds next day • Missiles on Israel continued through six weeks

  8. Iraq Attacks Back cont. • Iraqi hoped Israel would be drawn in the war • Many Arab nations would withdraw from coalition • Israel stayed out of war • United States- two Patriot missile in Israel • Netherlands- one Patriot Squadron • January 29, Iraq attacked and occupied Khafji

  9. Coming to an End • Battle of Khafji ended 2 days later • Iraq resisted Saudi's counterattack • Massive American air attacks • Saudi’s recaptures land next day • Iraqis fled to Kuwait border • Retreating Iraqis formed along Iraq-Kuwait highway.

  10. The End • Highway of Death- bombed extensively by air forces • Hundreds of Iraqi troops were killed • United States, United Kingdom, France pursued Iraqi forces • Moving 150 miles of Baghdad before withdrawing • One hundred hours after ground campaign, 28 February, Bush declared a cease-fire • Declared that Kuwait had been liberated.
