But one has to also remember to evaluate their similarities as well as their differences.

Introduction The age of the Enlightenment opened the door to new ways of thinking and goals that lead to the nobility seeking a bigger voice within the government while the monarchy wanted to modernize and suppress the nobles. The power of all monarchies were put to the test as more of the nobles were questioning their power. Different monarchies approached this new found problem with the nobles with different methods. For example Peter the Great from Russia and Frederick the Great from Prussia are two rulers who had to find ways to control the nobility. Although Peter decided to use strict policies to keep his power Frederick was more of a politique.

  5. Body One Peter the Great was the tsar of Russia. Russia was considered the backwards country since it had not modernized as the other European powers. Peter the Greats’ goal was to modernize Russia after he experience life in the western hemisphere. Once he was in power he created policies like that of the table of ranks which would draw the nobility into state service. This reminded the nobles that they were not in charge and kept them from questioning the power of the tsar. The army was introduced to drafting and policies for officers and general military discipline from the West. However, Frederick the Great took a different approach that would keep the nobles and his people’s interest intact.

  7. Body Two Frederick the Great is considered a politique because he took into account everyone’s needs. His goal during his regime was to keep his absolute power but also to rationalize the legal system and make it more effective. Although the nobles wanted to look for more power which would impacted the monarchy he still kept control by requiring the nobles to have their positions but they needed to qualify by merit. He also allowed the nobles to join his court as another way to please them. Frederick also depicted his Enlightenment ideas by allowing students to learn new ideas of the era and also supported religious toleration.

Peter was trying to get respect by modernizing and Frederick wanted to find a common ground Focus: Peter the Great V.S Frederick the Great

  9. Body Three Peter the Great and Frederick the Great both wanted to keep the nobility under control while modernizing their empires. However they found different ways to control the nobles. Frederick gave them what they wanted but placed more requirements on them. Peter passed laws that would give the nobles no real voice in the government and placed them to do military service.Peter’s approach to the nobles would create resentment but since people were more scared of him and the power of his army no rebellion was successful. Frederick took a pragmatic approach to make sure everyone agreed with his decision to avoid any conflict or risk of losing power.

Conclusion In retrospect, Peter the Great’s approach to modernizing and controlling the nobility had to do with enforcing fear while Frederick the Great found the most practical way to make everyone agree with him while at the same time he was able to get his goals accomplished. Although both of these monarchies were looking for ways to keep control Peter’s approach was more successful since he was able to keep the nobility from rising up. Frederick the Great’s policies only kept his subjects in control for a short period of time while Russia soon became a major European power.
