  1. And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." (Matthew 12:41-44) “For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.” (2 Cor. 8:12)

  2. Do This In My Memory

  3. Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),

  4. they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews." Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He

  5. trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.‘” And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. Now from the sixth But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe: Here, Lord I give myself away, ‘tis all that I can do!” At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away, it was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lemasabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, "This man is calling Elijah." And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him." And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

  6. To The Unknown Mom

  7. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Hospitable Mother: • This mother had a strong appreciation of using her home for showing hospitality to others (2 Kings 4:8-11) • Was observant of the needs of others & cared enough to get involved • She opened up her home in a thoughtful manner… She provided a place for rest, a place for study, and a place for privacy • She understood the importance of simple things. Even though she was a wealthy woman, she stuck with the simple. She wasn’t a materialistic and worldly woman. She wasn’t flaunting her wealth • She made her home a place of service. Anyone in her home learned the importance of loving others and putting others ahead of self.

  8. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Hospitable Mother: • She appreciated spiritual people and surrounded her home with such individuals (verse 9): • Could have shown this hospitality to anyone – Princes, business leaders, social leaders, and other men & women of fame & stature • So why Elisha? She saw he was a holy man… a man of God. It wasn’t even his miracles or prophecy but his spirituality. • She blessed her home this way – She surrounded her family with one who’d leave a good example, influence them in serving God, teach them about God, and share God’s love and loving God with them

  9. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Hospitable Mother: • As a result, her home was blessed. Twice God provided life when life seemed hopeless (vs. 11-37) • First: Providing her with a son when she had no children. • Second: Raising that son from the dead when he was a bit older. • What if she had been too busy to show hospitality? What if she filled her family’s life with other kinds of influences? • Godly and faithful mothers are to be praised because of their hospitality & service to others as well as the spiritual influences they bring into their family’s life (Heb 6:10; 1 Tim 5:10)

  10. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Sacrificial Mother: • David has died… Solomon is a new king. When given a chance to ask for anything, he prays for wisdom (I Kings 4:29-34) • Showed humility and wisdom… God gave him wisdom & everything else! • His wisdom surpassed all… He taught others & many came to hear him • Sounds like a great life right? Imagine all the people flooding to you asking you to solve all their problems! • We see a mother in a difficult & despondent place (3:16-23) • Her profession is not good… but her pain is still real! • Situation: Another mother crushes her baby in her sleep. That mother “swaps” the dead baby for this mother’s living child. Now both mothers are claiming this child is theirs. How do you prove it? • She is heart broken… angry… helpless… hopeless. No one to defend her.

  11. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Sacrificial Mother: • This mother shows complete sacrificial love for the welfare of her child (verses 24-28) • We admire Solomon’s wisdom, but imagine the horror in the hearts of these women. Would he really do it? Could he be serious? • The fraudulent mother: No real emotional ties. Shockingly, she seems accepting of the offer. She is selfish, only concerned about herself. She definitely wants the child, but its not out of love • The real mother: She is crushed, but will give up the child in order to save its life. She will sacrifice the relationship for its good. • Godly and faithful mothers are to be honored because of the sacrifices they make for their children’s physical, but most importantly spiritual welfare (Lk 9:23; Phil 2:3-4)

  12. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Faithful Mother: • Another difficult and painful situation… This mother has a daughter who is demon possessed (Matthew 15:21-22) • Whatever this demon was doing to the girl… it was awful! She was not herself… She was severely oppressed. Her daughter was hurting and out of control… and this mother could no nothing about it. • She couldn’t fix her, but she knew that Jesus could. She believed in the power of Jesus. Jesus was the answer to her family’s needs! • This mother pursues Jesus with persistent faith (vs. 23-28) • The disciples wanted her to go away… saw her as a constant distraction • She still persisted even though Jesus tested her – His words were difficult but she won’t give up because she knows Jesus is the answer • She responded with great faith – Humility, grace, more persistence • So Jesus answers… the daughter is healed immediately of the demon!

  13. Great Examples From Nameless Mothers • The Faithful Mother: • This world needs more mothers like this one… Mothers who are persistent in seeking Jesus by faith. Mothers who understand that Jesus is the answer to all of their family’s needs. (Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 11:11)
