  4. What are Pronouns? A Pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun or nouns. Marie went to the store. She bought a dress.

  7. What is an Antecedent? An antecedent is the noun that a pronoun replaces. Marie went to the store. She bought a dress.

  10. Often an Antecedent is Understood. 1st & 2nd person pronouns have antecedents that are understood. I am going to the party. ( the antecedent of I is the person speaking or writing)

  20. Reflexive /Intensive Pronouns A reflexive /intensive pronoun either refers to the noun and directs action back to it or emphasizes the noun or pronoun.

  38. Literary Genres This year we will be reading a variety of literary Genres. Let’s review them before we get into our short story segment.

  39. Literary Genre (Groups) Fiction Short Story Drama Novels Poetry Nonfiction Biography Autobiography Essay Speech

  40. Fiction Stories that are not true but usually represent reality. These stories come from the author’s imagination and are meant to entertain and make a point.

  41. Short Story A fictional story with very few characters, usually one setting and involving the solution of only one problem.

  42. Drama A composition written in prose or verse that tells a story and is performed by actors. Dramas are presented on theater stages and in television, radio or movies productions .

  43. Novel A long piece of fiction over 50,000 words that has many characters, a main plot and many subplots.

  44. Poetry Writing that uses rhythm and rhyme to create images meant to appeal to the reader emotionally.

  45. Nonfiction Writing that reflects facts and/or opinions that are grounded in reality and not imaginary worlds.

  46. Biography A true account of a person’s life written by someone other than that person.

  47. Autobiography The story of a person’s life as told by that person. The reader will learn about all the events in the person’s life from his/her point of view.

  48. Essay A relatively short written piece that reflects the author’s opinion on some subject.

  49. Speech A written presentation that is presented orally in a public setting.
