  1. The Theology of Sex 1 Corinthians 6:9-20

  2. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (ESV) 9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  3. 1 Corinthians 6:12-14 (ESV) 12“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.

  4. 1 Corinthians 6:15-17 (ESV) 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

  5. 1 Corinthians 6:15-17 (ESV) 18Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

  6. The Theology of Sex • Our Problem with Sex • God’s Purpose for Sex • God’s Provision for Sexual Restoration

  7. Our Problem with Sex • 1 Cor 6:1212“All things are lawful for me,” Paul refuses to hold the Law over their head.

  8. Our Problem with Sex • 1 Cor 6:1212“All things are lawful for me,” • But not all things are helpful. • “When one loves God, all things are permissible; but when one loves God, one loves what He loves. This means love for all others, for they are loved by God; and conduct will be regulated by this love.” – Kenneth Bailey, Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes • But I will not be enslaved by anything.

  9. Our Problem with Sex • 1 Cor 6:1313 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. Worldly Wisdom = Selfish Consumption

  10. Our Problem with Sex • The Problem of Prostitution • 1 Cor 6:14b Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Prostitution = Sex in Exchange for Compensation

  11. Our Problem with Sex • The Problem of Pornography • Jerry Ropelato, Internet Pornography Statistics • Annual pornography revenues are more than $90 billion worldwide. • Pornography revenues in the U.S. were $13 billion in 2006, more than all combined revenues of professional football, baseball, and basketball franchises or the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC ($6.2 billion).

  12. Our Problem with Sex • The Problem of Pornography • Jerry Ropelato, Internet Pornography Statistics • 40 million U.S. adults regularly visit Internet porn websites. • 47% of Christians say pornography is a major problem in the home. • The most popular day of the week for viewing porn is Sunday. • 89% of all pornographic web pages come out of the U.S. followed by 4% out of Germany and 3% out of Britain. We’re world leaders in porn! • One in three visitors to pornographic websites are women. • 17% of women struggle with porn addiction.

  13. Our Problem with Sex • The Problem of Pornography • Jerry Ropelato, Internet Pornography Statistics • 90% of children between the ages of eight and sixteen have viewed pornography on the Internet, in most cases unintentionally. • The average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is eleven. • 80% of 15-17 year olds have multiple hard-core porn exposures. • 90% of 8-16 year olds have viewed porn online. • 29% of 7-17 year olds who would freely give out their home address (14% would give out there email address).

  14. Our Problem with Sex • “Pornography is anything the heart uses to find sexual expression outside of God’s intended design for relational intimacy. It is anything that tempts and corrupts the human heart into desiring sensual pleasure in sinful ways.” – Harvest USA, Living in a “Porn is the Norm” Culture • Matthew 5:27-2827 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you thateveryone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  15. Porneia = Sexual Immorality

  16. Our Problem with Sex • Romans 1:21-2321 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

  17. Our Problem with Sex • Romans 1:24-25, 29-3224 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. • 29 …They are… 30...inventors of evil… 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

  18. Our Problem with Sex • 1 Cor 6:18b Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. • How is your prayer life? • How is your time in the Word of God? • How is your time in fellowship? • How are you doing with sharing your faith with others? • How are you relating to the opposite sex? • How is intimacy with your wife? • How is your relationship with your daughter as she grows up to be a beautiful young woman?

  19. God’s Purpose for Sex • Sex points to our union with Christ. • 1 Cor 6:13b-17a The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

  20. God’s Purpose for Sex • “James Moffat observes that Paul does not attack sexual immorality as a menace to public health or as a case of psychological unfairness to one of the partners, but as ‘a sin that strikes at the roots of the personality which is to flower into a risen life.’” – Kenneth Bailey, Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes p. 185

  21. God’s Purpose for Sex • “Here his [Paul’s] thought apparently owes nothing to any antecedent (previous) notions, and displays a psychological insight into human sexuality which is altogether exceptional by first-century standards. The Apostle denies that coitus (sexual intercourse) is, as the Corinthians would have it, merely a detached and (as it were) peripheral function…of the genital organs. On the contrary, he insists that it is an act which, by reason of its very nature, engages and expresses the whole personality in such a way as to constitute a unique mode of self-disclosure and self-commitment.” – Kenneth Bailey, Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes p. 193

  22. God’s Purpose for Sex • Genesis 2:24 The two will become one flesh. • Genesis 2:18 It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit (corresponding to) for him. • Genesis 1:26 Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. • Isaiah 54:55 For your Maker is your husband… • Isaiah 62:55 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you,and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,so shall your God rejoice over you.

  23. God’s Purpose for Sex • Hosea 2:16, 18, 19-2016 “And in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’... 18 And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground… 19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.

  24. God’s Purpose for Sex • Ephesians 5:25-2725 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

  25. God’s Purpose for Sex • Ephesians 5:28-3228 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

  26. God’s Purpose for Sex • “The Bible does not counsel sexual abstinence before marriage because it has such a low view of sex but because it has such a lofty one. The Biblical view implies that sex outside of marriage is not just morally wrong but also personally harmful. If sex is designed to be part of making a covenant and experiencing that covenant’s renewal, then we should think of sex as an emotional ‘commitment apparatus.’” – Tim Keller, The Meaning of Marriage p. 226 Godly Wisdom = Sacrificial Love

  27. 226 Godly Wisdom = Covenantal Love

  28. God’s Provision for Sexual Restoration • Embrace the Gospel! Be Cleansed! • 1 Cor 6:1111 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. • Be empowered by the Gospel! • Flee sexual immorality! 1 Cor 6:18-20 18Flee from sexual immorality • Glorify God in your body! 1 Cor 6:19-2019 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

  30. Reflection Questions • Who knows what’s going on in your heart and mind? Where’s your accountability? • What does it look like for you to flee from sexual immorality now? Ask your spouse or a friend for help with this. • What thoughts and/or actions have compromised your present or potential future marriage? • How has your decisions regarding your sexuality affected others (i.e. family, friends, community)? • What sexual sin do you need to repent of? Who will you confess this to? • What shame are you carrying from past sexual sin or from being sinned against? From what do you need to be cleansed?
