  1. ME 495 Design of an Integrated Solar – Geothermal Residential HVAC System Dale Summach Prabhjot Tung Tony Chomiak

  2. Project Description • Design a way to integrate solar energy into an existing geothermal HVAC system for residential applications.

  3. Clean Energy Developments • Manufacturer of energy efficient HVAC systems using geothermal energy • Projects throughout Canada • Current Geothermal System

  4. Objectives • Design 3 or 4 ways of using solar energy in combination with an existing geothermal HVAC system • Provide a excel spreadsheet which can be used to determine the ideal system for given inputs • The inputs include: weather data, house size, system availability • Relative cost and energy savings per square foot are used for comparison of different systems

  5. Progress • Conference call with client on October 8, 2008 • Project Variables and deliverables discussed • Reviewed existing and new technologies currently used by other companies • Geo-exchange fundamentals • Photo-Voltaic Cells • Solar Tracking • Passive Solar Heating • Solar Wall

  6. Scheduling • Will have final designs chosen by November 7 • Research and data collection completed by November 17 so calculations can begin • Technical calculations complete December 2 • Spreadsheet complete February 22 • Final project complete February 27
