  4. Figure 35-61 ALEXANDER CALDER, Lobster Trap and Fish Tail, 1939. Painted sheet aluminum and steel wire. 8’ 6” X 9’ 6”. Museum of Modern Art, New York. Alexander Calder explored the relationship of motion to three-dimensional form in these sculptures. He had an engineering background which helped him in balancing the wires, rods and organic shapes in his mobiles. Kinetic sculpture -3D artwork that moves.

  8. Abstract maquette • Create 2 drawings showing different views of your abstract sculpture. This drawing will be used to create a file for printing your design on the Makerbot 3 printer. • Make a 3D model from cardstock paper of this sculpture. This maquette can be no larger than 4 inches in one direction. • We will be collaborating with Mr. Diehl’s Honors Engineering and Robotics class. They will use your designs to create a file with modeling software. This means that you must keep to the following aesthetic requirements to make this collaboration a success.

  11. Design requirements • Design must be abstract in the style of Alexander Calder’s stabiles. • Form must contain between 3-4 surface planes. Keep design simple and abstract-no imagery! • Your 3D model and drawings will used to help Mr. Diehl’s students understand your design but does not mean that the file will come out exactly like you planned. • When files are finished we will print your maquette on the 3D printer.

  12. Setting requirements • While you wait for your maquette to be made into a file and printed you will create a 3D setting for your model. • This setting must be based upon a specific place. Details such as buildings, plants, roads must mimic specific place. • Setting must be 3D and can be made from paper, found objects, cardboard, drawings, photos, clay, etc. • Setting can rendering in a cartoony style like Red Grooms or a architectural style ( see images on next slides ). • Your abstract 3D printed maquette will be placed in your setting and must fit to the correct scale with the location.

  14. Last step • Download a figure, animal, object, ect. Put this file in your H drive. • Shrink object to scale using Makerware. Object or figures scale should match or fit the setting. • We will print out thingverse object and place it in the setting.

  15. Process in order 1.Create 2 drawings showing different views of your abstract sculpture. This drawing will be used to create a file for printing your design on the Makerbot3D printer. 2. Make a 3D model from cardstock paper of this sculpture. This maquette can be no larger than 4 inches in one direction. YOU MUST FIND A PHOTO OF A SPECIFIC PLACE AS A REFERENCE. 3. While you wait for your maquette to be made into a file and printed you will create a 3D setting for your model. 4. Download a figure, animal, object, ect. Put this file in your H drive. ( this step can be done at any point )
