Abrupt Transition of Ecosystem over Semiarid Region • Land ecosystem is mainly determined by climate and soil condition. • The response of vegetation to climate change can be either smooth or dramatic. • Previous study shows that abrupt transition of ecosystem (e.g., between grassland and desert) could occur within the land-atmosphere coupled system. • Our result suggests that land system alone (with vegetation interacts with soil water) can also display abrupt transition. • Related topics: • Transformation of desert to grassland • Grazing Current work • (1) Spatial pattern of vegetation distribution • Vegetation pattern can occur along the transition zone when horizontal processes are considered. • How will such spatial pattern influence the abrupt transition? • (2) CLM/DGVM • Why we can not find abrupt transition in CLM/DGVM? • Competition between different spices? • Influences of multiple processes? • Different model parameters? • Lack of some essential mechanisms?
