  4. Louisiana Purchase • 1803 • Bought from France • For 15million dollars • Doubled the size of the US • Went from Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains • Explorers • Louis and Clark

  5. Indian Removal Act • Act that said forced all Native Americans to leave their homelands and move to ‘Indian Territory’ • Trail of Tears • Issued by Andrew Jackson • Georgia vs. Cherokee • Ruled that Cherokee could stay • Jackson ignored ruling, and forced them out anyways

  6. Mexican/American War • President James K. Polk forced conflict with Mexico • War ended with Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Gave us modern day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico

  7. The Gold Rush • Gold first found by John Sutter • at Sutter’s Mill in the Sacramento Valley in California • 1848 • Started ‘Gold Rush’ • Created a series of mining camps • Irish and Chinese laborers

  8. Mormons • Religion created by Joseph Smith • Moved westward to avoid persecution • Lead by Brigham Young • Settled in current day Utah
