  2. Social and Political Changes • 1. The Great Awakening • 2. Forced the questioning of traditions and religious authority • 3. Produced liberty- strong spirit of personal freedom • 4. The beginning of unrest began with the colonies being under English rule but having no say • 5. French-Indian War- colonists moved into French territory and France attacked • 6. 1763- Britain sends troops to colonies and wins the war—major debt • 7. Proclamation of 1763- King George forbade colonists from moving into conquered land and stationed troops • 8. Colonists outraged- viewed this as punishment • 9. Stamp Act- tax on colonial documents that was paid to England– help with the war debt

  3. New Laws and Taxes leads to Dissatisfaction • 10. Colonists began to boycott British goods • 11. Parliament repealed Stamp Act replaced with Declaratory Act • 12. Townsend Acts- placed duties (taxes) on all imports from overseas • 13. Colonists again protest acts repealed • 14. Writs of Assistance- allowed troops to search anywhere for items with unpaid duties • 15. Tea Act-(1773)- allowed Britain’s tea to be cheaper • 16. Boston Tea Party- colonists dumped 342 chests of tea in protest of the Tea Act • 17. Coercive Acts- Intolerable Acts- passed by England as a punishment to the colonists • 18. The colonists began to take steps to govern themselves

  4. Steps Toward Independence • 19. First Continental Congress-(Sept 1774)- delegates sent from 12 colonies to respond to the Intolerable Acts • Wrote a letter to Britain asking for respect • Kings response- stronger measures-proposed “blows” • 20. Second Continental Congress- (May 1775)-had to decide between peace or separation with Great Britain (acting as a gov’t body) • Not everyone agreed, for months they debated • Thomas Paine- “Common Sense”- colonists feelings toward Britain

Declaration of Independence= document splitting America from Britain • Committee- John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman • Thomas Jefferson drafted the letter (influenced by political thoughts) to the world on why they should be free • July 4, 1776- Second Continental Congress signs the Declaration of Independence • Revolutionary Document
