  1. Agenda- September 30 • Final Acts – Events that Led to War • “Get Up, Stand Up”- Bob Marley

  2. FINAL ACTS THAT LED TO WAR The final steps to war. The tensions continue to rise.

  3. Tools of Protest: Terms and People • Boycott- refusal to buy goods. • Samuel Adams- leader of the Sons of Liberty. Main figure of opposition to British in Boston. • Sons of Liberty- group of colonists who formed a secret society to oppose British rule. • Propaganda- telling of half truths to better suit your side. • Taxation without Representation- key reason for the start of the war. Colonists felt they had no say in the government or control of their lives!

  4. Townshend Acts/ Writs of Assistance 1767 • Placed indirect (hidden) taxes on imported goods such as glass, paper, paint, lead and tea. • Colonists reaction: smuggling (sneaking in illegally) goods into the colonies. Not buying the taxed goods. • England counterreaction: passes the Writs of Assistance (search warrants) which allowed soldiers to enter homes/businesses looked for smuggled goods.

  5. Boston Massacre • 1,000 British soldiers arrive in Boston. Tension fills the streets. • March 5, 1770- tensions explode between dockworkers and British Soldiers. • Soldiers fire into the crowd after he supposedly heard the word “fire” as the colonists were throwing snowballs and rocks at them. Shots are fired 5 colonists are killed. • Sons of Liberty call this the “Boston Massacre”.

  6. Boston Massacre • Propaganda is used by the Sons of Liberty to spark further outrage towards the British.

  7. Tea Act- 1773 • Forced the colonists to only buy British Tea from the British East India Company. • Tea tax applied • This led to the Boston Tea Party. • Colonists refused to buy the tea.

  9. Boston Tea Party • Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians raided the British ships and tossed 342 crates of tea into Boston Harbor. • The British are furious. They will pass the Intolerable Acts

Intolerable/Coercive (to force) Acts- English Reaction to Boston Tea Party • British passed 4 laws : • Closed Boston Harbor until repay for tea. • Forbade any town meetings (stop the Sons of Liberty) • Freed all British soldiers accused of crimes in colonies. • Reinstated Quartering Act- forced colonists to house British soldiers.

  11. Intolerable and Coercive Acts- 1774 • These are the same acts, just different perspective. • Coerce- to force. The British tried to force the colonists to pay back the tea. Punishment for Tea Party. • Intolerable- having to put up with too much (unfair). The Colonists felt that they were being punished for the actions of a small group.
