  10. Honors vs. AcademicIt’s a balancing act . . . . BEMS GOAL All BEMS students will take at least one honors class before leaving middle school. Make choices that will keep your child well balanced and not stressed.

  15. Math Options • Math 8 • This is a remedial class. • Very few students will be taking this class. • Double Block Algebra 1 • Math everyday. • Allows more time to learn Algebra I • Math Workshops.

Student Experiences • Catering – Students learn the role of the sales and catering department and the importance of communicating with the customer to determine needs, menus, and event set-up. • Once the information has been finalized, it than needs to be clearly communicated to the operating departments. • Staging – Students learned and used tools to diagram a room for an event, to include tables, staging, set up and audio-visual. • Culinary – Students learn about the full process from purchasing food, scheduling staff, preparing and delivering the final product. • Banquets – Students learn about final table set ups, maintaining buffet tables, proper serving techniques, and clearing.

  20. Homework in 8th Grade • Homework is a practice of the student learning. • Students should not rely on resource to complete homework. • Teachers will have homework posted on the Belmont Ridge Middle School web page, by teacher name.

  21. Spectrum • Offered during 45 minute of the resource class. • Student participation is optional. • Participation option may be exercised from year to year. • Selection criteria is used to identify students who will be participating in Spectrum

LCPS Academy of Science (AOS) • Program is located at Dominion High School for students in grades 9 - 12. • Application/selection process begins in the 8th grade. • Must have the PSAT (Administered in the Fall of 8th Grade). • Must complete Algebra I with a grade of B or better by the end of the 8th Grade • AOS website: http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/aos/

  23. Thomas Jefferson High SchoolforScience and Technology • Program is located in Fairfax, Virginia • Application/selection process begins in the 8th grade and includes an admission examination. • Must complete Algebra I by the time of enrollment • TJHS website: http://www.tjhsst.edu

Naval JROTC Located at Loudoun County High School The mission of the NJROTC program is to instill in students the ideals of Leadership, Character, Honor, and Service as the foundation for success in life. The program's focus on order, precision, self-discipline, respect for authority, ethical behavior, patriotism, service, and citizenship is designed to prepare students for success in life, regardless of their future plans.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) • Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a research and evidenced-based practice. • It creates a common vision of behavioral expectations through consistent language and practices. • PBIS is a framework of tiered approaches to address ALL the needs of our students. • PBIS Link

  27. Rules You Need to Know 1. Behavior is learned and serves a specific purpose. 2. Behavior is related to the context within which it occurs. a.    This is why parents and teachers don’t see the same behaviors 3. Children comply with the rules 80% of the time. Guess how often they are complimented for appropriate behavior? a. Less than 2 percent b. We can increase appropriate behavior by 80% just by recognizing and rewarding appropriate behavior.
