  1. Millimeter and Submillimeter Galaxy Surveys Jason Glenn The University of Colorado Bolocam P.A.R. Ade, J.E. Aguirre, J.J. Bock,S.F. Edgington,A. Goldin,S.R. Golwala,D. Haig,A.E. Lange,G.T. Laurent, P.R. Maloney, P.D. Mauskopf,P. Rossinot, J. Sayers, P. Stover, H. Nguyen Z-Spec Many of above plus C.M. Bradford, L. Earle, B. Naylor, J. Zmuidzinas SHARC-2 A. Kovacs Caltech Cardiff U. Colorado JPL

  2. (Sub)Millimeter Galaxies • CFIRB: approximately = extragal. Opt./UV • 100s of galaxy candidates detected • High z: <zopt>  2.4 • High implied luminosities (L~1013 Lsolar) • & SFRs (~103 Msolar/year) • Masses from CO: molecular ~1010 Msolar • dynamical ~1011 Msolar

  3. Bolocam Candidates—CSO 324 square arcminutes (0.25 sq. deg. survey of COSMOS underway) Pixel Sensitivity Histogram 17 Galaxy Candidates Jackknife Histogram  = 1.1 mm (Laurent et al., ApJ, 623, 742)

  4. P(D) Fluctuation Analysis N(S)  S-δ δ = 2.7 +0.18/-0.15 (1mJy  Sν  10mJy) N(>1 mJy) = 940 +50/-140 deg-2 (95% confidence) • Results (Maloney et al. 2005) • δ similar to theoretical expectations (Blain et al. 2002) • Although integral number counts N(>1 mJy) 2-3 lower than 1.2 mm observations (Greve et al. 2004) & models Wider & deeper observations underway will more fully characterize the number counts

  5. These Five Galaxies • T: 20 < T < 40 K • L: 1.0-1.21013 L☼, 1.31011 L☼ • : 350 m essential for T and L; 850 m – 1.2 mm for M 350 m Follow Up 5 Galaxies All redshifted to z=2 • Large FOV Telescopes • Surveys, photometry • Redshifts • SMA/ALMA • Astrometry/IDs • SEDs • Morphologies (Laurent et al. and Kovacs et al. in prep.)

  6. Molecular Gas Redshifts: Z-Spec @ CSO First light June 2005! • Z-Spec • R~800 km s-1 • 160 60-mK bolometers + waveguide-coupled grating This spectrum is not calibrated and the error bars are preliminary; do not consider it quantitatively. Integrated Line Intensity • Also • ZEUS (JCMT)—Cornell • LMT—UMass • GBT—Maryland 180 Frequency (GHz) 300
