  3. Middle Ages • The Middle Ages is a time period between the 5th and 15th century. It follows the fall of the Roman Empire and goes until the Renaissance.

China in the Middle Ages • Terms • Buddhism- a religion founded by Siddhartha Gautama , the Buddha • Taught that the way to find truth was to give up all desires • Neo Confucianism- system of beliefs introduced by the Chinese thinker Confucius; taught that people needed to have a sense of duty to their family and community in order to being peace to society

Neo-Confucianism Society Government • Created a new class of scholar-officials • Taught that life in this world was just as important as afterlife • Expected to help others • Became a religion with beliefs about the spiritual world • Felt it people followed them, they would find peace of mind and live in harmony with nature • Wise leaders were needed • Used civil service exams to hire officials • Ppl. Accepted for what they can DO not WEALTH
