  2. Take Note • Points that lie on the same line are collinear points. • The line y = mx + b is a straight line with slope m and y-intercept b. • The value of m indicates the direction and steepness of a line. • The value of b indicates where the graph intersects the y-axis.

  3. Draw a line through the points A(1,-2) and D(4,4). Find the coordinates of 2 more points on the line. Question: Step 1: find the slope of the line Step 2: use the slope to move up or down; back or forth from a given point. Step 3: repeat!

  4. Draw a line through the points A(1,-2) and D(4,4). Find the coordinates of 2 more points on the line. SOLUTION

  5. A line has a slope of -2. It passes through the points (k,2) and (4,-2). What is the value of k. YOU TRY

  6. A line has a slope of -2. It passes through the points (k,2) and (4,-2). What is the value of k. SOLUTION Plot the second point (4,-2) Move left 1 space and up 2 spaces until you reach the y-coordinate of 2 Look at the x-coordinate and that is the value of k. Therefore k = 2

  7. CLASS WORK • Complete questions 8 – 12 on page 105 of the text.
