  1. Study Tips Career Guidance and Counselling Office Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary Naxxar Malta

  2. First of all- attidude • Summer is over • You had months of fun..hopefully.. and probably a summer job now settle down to a school routine

  3. Secondly - attitude • If you are disappointed with your results you have a choice: • To get cracking and get better results • To continue feeling unhappy and get more lost into not doing your work as a student because of self pity • To think you are hopeless and spend time with friends doing nothing – you will get an A level in friendship and hanging about

  4. Thirdly - attitude • Decide what you really would like to achieve with some effort: • During this year if you are in course 1 or 2 • During the next two years if you are in course 2 or three

  5. Fourthly - attitude • If you do nothing, nothing will happen • Asking for help and information is necessary as there are many further study options

  6. Fifth point - attitude • If you only think about studying nothing will happen… you need to sit down, make a plan and start… • It would help if you do this agreement to start together with a friend even if you study separately

  7. Self evaluation • Everyone is different so if you got very high grades in your SEC results then you can assess the amount of time you need to study to achieve decent results that you deserve

  8. Self evaluation • If you got low grades and studied a great deal you know you can do it but you need to work hard… don’t give up and start with a steady pace

  9. Illusions of confidence Whatever your grades for SEC are, for post secondary education you need to put in more effort

  10. Simple study plan • Do your home works, essays assignments and projects • Keep your notes up to date • Disobeythe instructions of the three Fs: [ph]otocopy, file, forget

  11. Simple study plan • So do the opposite: • Revise revise revise • Read read read the notes and the books or handouts • Ask your tutors when you do not understand and not three months later but ASAP [as soon as poss]

  12. Simple study plan – some rules • If your break is longer then your study period – it doesn’t work!!!!! • Calculate how much time you use on MP3, fb, MSN, SMS, pets, PSP, TV, fighting with mum and anyone who is around.., hunting for food, clearing up your room [ha ha]

  13. Simple study plan – some rules • When you calculate how much time you use you will realise that you do have time to study • You do have time to study • You do have time to study

  14. Simple study plan – some rules • When you start studying eventually switch off your mobile, your computer if it is near you, and then you can use them as a reward after you have studied.

  15. Simple study plan • Once your files are organised • Oops they are not? • So organise your files and books

  16. Simple study plan • If you start as early as October/November • Half an hour per subject per day [after you do you homework] and Saturday and Sunday are catch up days

  17. Simple study plan • Sat and Sun are catch up days because you might have football, private lessons, scouts, ballet, music lessons, hanging out with friends on fountain, Barrakka or Hastings in Valletta etc etc on week days

  18. Simple study plan • Sat and Sun are catch up days because you might have been out late on Fri or Sat and need to sleep it off but in 24 hours you can fit in 3 to 4 hours work

  19. Simple study plan • if you start later on in the year you will need to dedicate more time per subject per day or you set yourself up for poor results

  20. Simple study plan • Remember that if you have free lessons in school you can start to do something - there is the library • And you can drag your friends with you and you all do some work – sit separately!!!!

  21. Simple study plan • Some people find that half and hour per subject could be too short so you can decide to use the time on one subject and then the next day you study another

  22. Simple study plan • You need to have self discipline • You might agree with a friend so you plan together even though you work in separate homes so that you will be supporting each other – study buddy

  23. Simple study plan • You can also talk to your teachers at school or the guidance teachers • They will help you to get organised • If you do extra work you can ask your subject teacher to correct it

  24. Simple study plan • Teachers are a good race of people mostly • If you work they will help you more • If you do not work they usually chase you – it is their duty – but when you do not respond or avoid they will move on

  25. So……………………. • Start • Start • Start • And continue • Continue • continue

  26. So……………………. • Staff in the Career Guidance and counselling office can help you to get yourself going
