  • The Principal Contractor has to take over and develop the health and safety plan and co-ordinate the activities of ALL contractors to ensure they comply with health and safety law.

  • To develop the health and safety plan and ensure it contains all the necessary information for implementation

  • To arrange for competent and adequately resourced contractors and ensure they comply with the provisions of the health and safety plan and its specific rules

  • To ensure the co-ordination and co-operation of all contractors including the self-employed

  • To obtain the main findings of contractors’ risk assessments and details of how they intend to manage their high risk operations

  • To ensure that ALL contractors have information about any risks on site that the project will bring about

  • To ensure that workers on the project have been given adequate training and information about risks to their health and safety

  • To ensure that contractors and workers comply with all site rules set out in the health and safety plan

  • To monitor the health and safety performance of the persons or companies working on the project

  • To ensure that everyone working on the site has the opportunity to discuss their views on any health and safety matters that may affect them, and to co-ordinate all discussions and views – Consultation

  • To make sure that only authorised persons are allowed onto the site/premises where construction is taking place

  • To display the notification of the project to the HSE where people at work can see it

  • To ensure that any information they have that is required for inclusion in the health and safety file is passed on to the Planning Supervisor

  • To ensure that any other designers or contractors they appoint, are competent
