“Above the Kneepcap” Working Group Report

This report discusses the best strategy for covering all spectral features above the knee through overlapping experiments. It addresses energy coverage of different techniques such as fluorescence, non-imaging Cerenkov arrays, e/g/m counter banks, and muon detection. The proposed design suggests a combination of fluorescence, Cerenkov, and muon arrays, covering a 3km x 3km area. Simulations and further work are needed to refine the design. The Cerenkov array will cover the range from 10^14 eV to 10^17 eV, overlapping with direct measurements at the low end and the fluorescence detector (FD) at the high end. Muon coverage will span most of the range.

  2. General Discussion on Apr.27 • Working discussed the best strategy for covering all the spectral features above the knee with overlapping experiments (in one location if possible) • Constraint given from “Below the Kneecap” Group: Direct Measurements will not reach above 21014 eV

  3. Energy Coverage of different techniques • Fluorescence • 1016.5 >1020 eV • Non-imaging Cerenkov Array: • 10141017 eV (requires ~10 km2) • e/g/m counter banks (100 100  10 m) • Muon: 1014>1018.5 eV • e/ g : 1014>1015.5 eV

  5. More work to come • Details of the design to be simulated • The 10km2 Cerenkov array will reach down to 1014 eV and up to 1017 eV • Overlap with FD at high end • Overlap with direct measurements at low end • Muon coverage over most of the range.
