  3. Answers • False • Chinese Exclusion Act, literacy test, quotas on immigration. • False – to have support from discrimination and not lose their heritage. • Pull – freedom, American Dream, etc. Push – persecution, lack of work, no freedom, etc.

  10. Tenements urban dwellings occupied by impoverished families. They are apartment houses that barely meet or fail to meet the minimum standards of safety, sanitation, and comfort.

Political Machines • Cities grew faster than the government • Informal political group takes control of the government • “Party Boss” • Fraud – they controlled the city’s finances • Bribes • In exchange for votes, they promised • Jobs - Housing • Food - Heat • Police Protection • Who did this appeal to?

How city bosses got rich • Once in control of the city's top elected offices, a city boss had many ways of making money.  He could demand bribes from businesses that wanted to get city contracts for jobs like paving city streets, for example.   • One famous example of Boss Tweed's demands for bribes is the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.  When a group of people who wanted to build the bridge needed approval from city officials, Tweed demanded a large bribe to make it happen.
