  2. Nationalism • How do you identify yourself? • American? Or by your ethnicity? Or another means? • What unites people and brings them together? • Nationalism a feeling of pride in one’s own country; cultural identity based on a people’s common language, religion, & customs

  3. France…Another French Revolution • The Problems • High unemployment • Middle class desire for suffrage • King Louis-Philippe refused to make changes

  4. Revolution of 1848 • Monarchy overthrown again • Another provisional (temporary) government is set up by moderates • New Government • The Constituent Assembly • Granted universal male suffrage • Organized workshops so unemployed could find work • Causes government treasury to empty • Revolution • Workers take to the streets and are put down by government forces • Many sent to prisons in the French colony of Algeria

  5. France…Another French Revolution • The Second Republic • After the failed revolution a new government was set up • Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte is elected President of France • Like his uncle, he asks for a plebiscite to make himself emperor

The Austrian Empire • The Austrian Empire consisted of people from many backgrounds • Germans, Czechs, Hungarians, Slovaks, Romanians, Slovenes, Poles, Croats, Serbians, Italians. • Many of the groups wanted their own state • Italians, Czechs, Hungary (Granted independence) • NATIONALISM DIVIDES IN THE BALKANS • (It does not unite) • Wait till WWI for further details
