  1. Silent Discussion • Working individually, you will move station to station. • At each station you will read the background information & add the NOTES to your Imperialism Era Notes in your Interactive Notebook. • At each station, using a marker you will post a comment and/or a question on the poster or answer the prompt. • ADD YOUR NAME TO EACH POST OR COMMENT • When you are finished, return to you desk and update your Interactive Notebook with highlights and your Table of Contents and review for tomorrow’s QUIZ and Tuesday’s ASSESSMENT.

  2. Spanish-American War The conflict between Cuba and Spain which erupted in 1897 was exaggerated in the American press/media by as competing newspapers used yellow journalism to sensationalize the conflict and sell newspapers. On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain lost its control over the remains of its overseas empire -- Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, to the United States. SUMMARIZE & ADD TO YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK

Answer one the prompts below on the POSTER… • In your opinion, was the U.S. justified in helping Cuba in their revolt against Spain? Explain why. • If you were an American during this time period, would you support American imperialism? Explain why.

Roosevelt’s BIG Stick Diplomacy • Big Stick ideology, Big Stick diplomacy, or Big Stick policy refers to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy: "speak softly, and carry a big stick.” • The idea of negotiating peacefully (speak softly), simultaneously threatening with a military (big stick). • Roosevelt used this type of diplomacy to protect the interests (resources) in Latin America.   6. Teller Amendment • In April 1898 Senator Henry M. Teller proposed an amendment to the U.S. declaration of war against Spain which proclaimed that the United States would not establish permanent control over Cuba. • The Senate passed the amendment on April 19, 1898 and after Spanish troops left the island in 1898, the United States occupied Cuba until 1902. Platt Amendment • Platt Amendment introduced by Senator Orville Platt in February 1901 allowed the United States "the right to intervene for the preservation of Cuban independence, the maintenance of a government adequate for the protection of life, property, and individual liberty..." Panama Canal ADD TO YOUR NOTES IN YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK • The U.S. gained construction rights for the Panama Canal by encouraging Panamanian revolt against the Columbian government. • The U.S. used Navy warships to block Columbian forces from entering Panama. • The new government in Panama supported a canal across its land. • The Panama Canal (1904-1914) created a military and shipping highway between the oceans.

Dollar Diplomacy • Under President Taft (after McKinley and Roosevelt), who also wanted to protect U.S. interests in Latin America used Dollar Diplomacy. • Trading “dollars for bullets” influencing governments through economic NOT military action.   16. Pershing & Wilson ADD TO YOUR NOTES IN YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK • John J. Pershing was a U.S. military general during the Mexican Revolution that affected U.S. interests in Mexico. • Woodrow Wilson was the president general during the Mexican Revolution that affected U.S. interests in Mexico. • These two are linked because President Wilson assigned John J. Pershing to go into Mexico to catch the infamous Francisco “Pancho” Villa who had killed 17 Americans in New Mexico… the mission FAILED!
