  2. Conflict Angelic World Flesh Devil What Is Life REALLY All About? LOSER Volition Is The Issue

  3. Temptation THE FLESH Consider yourself dead to it. FLEE its enticement Living in the sphere of the FLESH means that you are living with unconfessed personal sin in your life. God’s Word tells us in the book of Romans how to deal with that old sin nature. Galatians 5:19-21 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (NAS) Romans 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. (NAS) Colossians 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. (NAS) James 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. (NAS) 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NASB) 3

  4. Temptation According to this verse, God says your “old man,” was crucified with Christ on the cross, and since the old man is dead, we do not need to give in to the temptations that come from the old sin nature. In this verse that word reckon means that we are to agree with God that we are dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. According to verse 13 we are to stop yielding our members (that is our bodies) to sin and instead yield our bodies to God. Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (KJV) Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but [reckon ye also yourselves to be] alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV). Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (KJV). 4

  5. Temptation THE WORLD Do not conform to it CONQUER its thinking Living in the sphere of the WORLD means that you are living life with false priorities. If you are to live the "Spiritual Life," "Life in the sphere of the Spirit," the study of God’s Word, leading to a belief in what you study, and the choosing to apply the truth from God’s Word to your daily living, must have a higher priority in your life than anything of this world. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (NAS) Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (NAS) 1 John 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. (NAS) 5

  6. Temptation Religion is man by man’s efforts trying to gain the approval of God, while Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Religion says “DO, so that you will be blessed.” Christianity says “You have been blessed, now go and do.” 6

  8. Temptation Religion is man by man’s efforts trying to gain the approval of God, while Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Religion says “DO, so that you will be blessed.” Christianity says “You have been blessed, now go and do.” Worship and service to God in the energy of the flesh is religion. Religion produces service without producing the character of Christ. Religion serves to gain acceptance by God, while the Spiritual Life serves because acceptance has already been gained by faith in Christ. 8

  9. Temptation THE DEVIL Give him no place to work. RESIST him Living in the sphere of the DEVIL means that you are believing false doctrine, the lies of the devil and those who follow him, and as a result are living a life that is producing human good, which is evil. It is Satan’s desire that you live your life in the flesh, a life independent from God. Living life in the flesh produces human good, which is evil. Ephesians 4:27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. (NAS) James 4:7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (NAS) 1 Peter 5:6-9 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober {spirit,} be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in {your} faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. (NAS) 9

  10. Temptation HOLY SPIRIT LIFE OF CHRIST FLESH Personal Sin WORLD False Priorities DEVIL Human Good 10

  11. Temptation peirasmov" (peirasmos) “an experiment” “a trial” “temptation” God will test faith, BUT He will never solicit to evil. uJpofevrw (hupopheroo) “to bear by being under” “bear up” “to bear patiently” 1 Corinthians 10:13: No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it. (NAS) 11

  12. Temptation hJgevomai (hegeomai) “to consider” “to lead the way” “to go before” It means to add up the facts, to weigh and compare the information at hand. James 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have {its} perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (NAS) 12

  13. Temptation What are the facts we need to weigh? that God is faithful to limit testing to our spiritual and physical abilities that while not all things are good, God works everything together for good for those who love Him, living according to His purpose. that temptation is a trial of our faith allowed with a view toward reward that in times of adversity and opposition we have the opportunity to advance more rapidly in the faith. Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart. (NAS) 13

  14. Temptation poikivlo" (poikilos) “multicolored” Satan offers temptations in colors that we like. katergazomai(katergazomai) ergazomai “to work,” kata “according to a norm and standard.”

  15. Temptation hupophero, “to bear patiently” hupomeno, “to abide under, to persevere” persistence, tenacity, the ability to endure, to last. dokivmion (dokimion) “to put to the test for the purpose of approval” When we are in a tempting situation, the temptation is coming from the source of our old sin nature (the flesh) backed by Satan and the cosmic system (the world). But the test is coming from the Lord. The temptation is to sin, but the test is to exercise faith.

  16. Temptation tevleio" (teleios) “brought to its end” “finished” “full-grown, adult” James is not talking about sinless perfection He is talking about spiritual maturity. 16

  19. The Faith-rest Technique The exodus generation was not able to enter the promised land because of unbelief. God had proven himself to the people in the Passover and in the exodus They had been required to do nothing but stand still and see his salvation. He intended for them to take these lessons to heart and to conquer Canaan by resting on his power, but - except for Joshua and Caleb - they all failed because they did not believe his word to them. They did not have “faith-rest.” Hebrews 4:3-8 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, "As I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter My rest," although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has thus said somewhere concerning the seventh {day}, "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works"; and again in this {passage}, "They shall not enter My rest." Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, He again fixes a certain day, "Today," saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, "Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. (NAS) Hebrews 3:19 And {so} we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief. (NAS) 19

  20. The Faith-rest Technique The promised land in scripture is not a picture of heaven, but of spiritual maturity. The rest that God wants his people to enter is a rest of maximum production and blessing. We cannot enter that rest until we learn to have faith in the promises of god. The faith-rest technique is simply the process of claiming biblical promises. As we do this day after day after day, we are pumping spiritual iron and our faith is growing stronger. 20

(NAS) 1 Peter 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, that the proof of your faith, {being} more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (NAS) 30
