  3. Employee Safety and Health Employee safety and health are important concerns in today’s organizations

  4. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Definition : to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for every working person . Responsibilities: • Support the development of innovative ways of dealing with workplace hazards • Establish requirements for employers to keep records of injury and illness and, monitor certain occupational illnesses • Establish training programs to increase the competence of occupational safety and health personnel • Provide technical and compliance assistance and training and education to help employers reduce worker accidents and injuries

  5. OSHA Standards • Currently OSHA issues standards for a wide variety of workplace hazards including • Toxic substances • Electrical hazards • Hazardous wastes • Infectious diseases • Fire and explosion hazards • Dangerous atmospheres • Machine hazards

The Causes of Accidents Causes that leading to workplace accidents • Un safe Personal acts • unsafe conditions in the Physical environment • Accident proneness of employees. 1-Personal acts • It has been estimated that unsafe personal acts cause as much as 80 percent of organizational accidents. • Unsafe personal acts include such things as( taking unnecessary risks, failing to wear protective equipment, using improper tools and equipment, and taking unsafe shortcuts.) 2- Physical environment • Accidents can and do happen in all types of environments, such as offices, parking lots, and factories. Ex of commonly encountered unsafe work conditions (poor light ,sharp edge ).

  7. 3- Accident proneness: • certain people are accident prone. • Some employees, are more susceptible to accidents. • This condition may result from inborn traits.

How to measure safety Some equations are formed from certain rates and then measured and compared to similar departments… • Frequency rate Ratio that indicates the frequency with which disabling injuries occur. • Disabling injuries Work-related injuries that cause an employee to miss one or more days of work.

Organizational Safety Programs 1-Promoting safety: 1-Make the work interesting , uninteresting work leads to boredom and stress which all cause accidents . 2- Establish a safety committee. 3- Feature employee safety contests with prizes • For the employee with the best safety record • To test safety knowledge • To promote creativity 4- Publicize safety statistics 5-hold safety training programs

  10. 2-A safety training program P.325 • Assess the training needs • Test the level of employees’ safety skills • Design a program to solve the program • Get line managers on board • Evaluate the program effectiveness • Review the safety process

  11. Employee Health Occupational Health Hazards Occupational illness: any abnormal condition or disorder caused by exposure to environmental factors associated with employment. • chemicals in the workplace

  12. Stress in the workplace Stress: mental and physical condition that results from a perceived threat of danger, and the pressure to remove it. Burnout • Occurs when work is no longer meaningful to a person. • Result from stress or other work-related factors.
