  5. John Directs His Disciples to JesusJohn 1:35-42 • Two of John’s Disciples follow Jesus 35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), "where are You staying?" 39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

  6. John Directs His Disciples to JesusJohn 1:35-42 • Andrew Brings Peter to Jesus 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone).

  7. Jesus Meets Philip and NathanaelJohn 1:43-51 • Jesus Meets Philip 43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me." 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

  8. Jesus Meets Philip and NathanaelJohn 1:43-51 • Philip Brings Nathanael to Jesus 46 And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" 48 Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

  9. Jesus Meets Philip and NathanaelJohn 1:43-51 • Jesus – “You will see greater things…” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these." 51 And He said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

  10. Jesus Begins His Work • This is an exciting time! God is setting up a kingdom, His kingdom, and it will never be destroyed. Dan 2:44 • John has made the way straight for Jesus to begin His ministry by calling the people back to repentance, proclaiming that the kingdom of Heaven is at hand and heralding the coming of the Messiah! • Jesus is beginning to do the work that His Father has sent Him to do – a work that will make salvation possible for all who will follow Him.

  11. The Life of Christ (Part 1)Lesson 6 First Miracle in Cana Passover and temple Nicodemus John 2:1-3:21 11/7/2014 12

  12. Outline Lesson 6 Beginning of Ministry First Miracle in Cana (John 2:1-11) then to Capernaum Passover and cleanses the temple (John 2:13-25) Nicodemus visits Jesus (John 3:1-21) 11/7/2014 13

  13. Beginning of Jesus Ministry First Miracle in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-12) 1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and His disciples, to the marriage. 3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto Him, “They have no wine.” 4 Jesus saith unto her, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” 5 His mother saith unto the servants, “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.” 6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7 Jesus saith unto them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He saith unto them, “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.” And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 And saith unto him, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed on Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, and His mother, and His brethren, and His disciples: and they continued there not many days. 11/7/2014 14

  14. Beginning of Jesus Ministry Passover and Cleansing of the Temple (John 2:13-22) 13 And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when He had made a scourge of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, “Take these things hence; make not My Father's house an house of merchandise.” 17 And His disciples remembered that it was written, “The zeal of Thine house hath eaten me up.” 18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, “What sign shewest Thou unto us, seeing that Thou doest these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said unto them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then said the Jews, “Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt Thou rear it up in three days?” 21 But He spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore He was risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. 11/7/2014 15

  15. Beginning of Jesus Ministry Affect on the Hearers (John 2:23-25) 23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in His name, when they saw the miracles which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man. 11/7/2014 16
