  2. AICTE formed in 1945 AICTE ACT 1987 MANDATE Proper Planning and Coordinated development of technical education throughout the country. Promotion of Qualitative Improvements in relation to Planned Quantitative Growth. Maintenance of Norms and Standards.

System of accreditation put in place • National Board of Accreditation formed in 1994 under section 10(u) of the AICTE Act for periodic evaluation of technical institutes and programs. • It was made an independent autonomous body in 2010. Started accreditation based on OBE in 2013. Became signatory of Washington Accord in 2014

Two pillars : Accreditation and Autonomy • Today about 15% institutes are NBA accredited • AICTE has made accreditation mandatory for expansion in terms of seats and introduction of new programs. • These institutes are given multiple years of approval and no regulatory fee is charged as incentive. • Also this is one of the important parameters for funding. • AICTE has been supporting institutions to become autonomous so that they qualify to come under tier-I category for NBA accreditation • Target is to make all institutions autonomous in 10 years; Target is to have at least 50% institutes accredited by 2020

Twelve (12) NBA Accreditation criteria • Engineering knowledge – Curriculum revision, Faculty training • Problem analysis – Live industry problems, assignments • Design/development of solutions – Design thinking, Projects, Hackathons, Innovation cell. • Investigation – Examination reforms, Blooms taxonomy • Modern tool usage – Mandatory software and hardware, • MOUs for Centres of excellence by industry • The engineer and society – UBA, Internships • Environment and sustainability – UBA, mandatory courses • Ethics – Unique three-week student induction program • Individual and team work – Assignments, Quizzes, Projects • Communications – Soft skills, Life skills • Project management and Finance – Courses, Internships • Life-Long learning – MOOCs courses SWAYAM

AICTE Quality Initiatives in Technical Education • Regular revision of curriculum by experts (academia, industry) • Mandatory teacher training and certification : 8 modules on pedagogy, new technologies, student involvement, projects, exams etc. • Mandatory 3-week student induction program : ethics, society • Mandatory internships : Website • Examination reforms : Website, model question papers • Promoting innovation and startups • Mandatory accreditation : workshops, mentoring • Perspective plan : work in progress • Industry readiness : mandatory Industry Interaction cell • Selection of students: entrance exam NEETI • Smart India Hackathons • AICTE student Startup policy

Seminar Grant Provides financial assistance to institutions for organizing Symposium /Conference/ Seminar / Workshop at National and International level in various fields of Technical Education AICTE - INAE – TRF (Teachers Research Fellowship) Provides fellowship to Engineering Teachers for Doctoral Research in Central Laboratories in order to promote a research culture amongst the faculty in AICTE approved engineering institutions AICTE-INAE Travel Grant For engineering students to present papers abroad has been launched for enhancing the quality of engineering education in the country. Travel Grant - Faculty The scheme enables meritorious faculty to interact at International Level Conferences, both within and outside India, Seminars, and Symposia.

  26. INDIA’S RESEARCH OUTPUT HAS BEEN GROWING *Only 530 institutions ‘unified’ on Web of Science have been considered for this analysis, these institutions account for 70% of India’s output; 290 of these are academic institutions; ESCI = Emerging Sources Citation Index
