Cause • Europeans want a quicker route to India for better trading • Russia wants access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Black and Mediterranean Seas • Ottoman Empire • corrupt rulers fail to modernize with the rest of the world, making it weak and vulnerable • lets other countries take advantage • US wants oil in the Middle East

  3. Cause • Europe wants the resources in the Middle East, mainly oil • needs natural resources for Industrial Revolution • Egypt turns over the Suez Canal over to the British in turn for financial support • Importance - shows Ottoman Empire was weak and had little money to control its empire

  4. Course • Russia declares war on the Ottoman Empire • Ottoman Empire defeats Russia with the help of Britain and France in the Crimean War • Prevents Russia from obtaining a very important piece of land and access to the Atlantic • force policy • Britain uses force to get what they wanted

  5. Consequence • Treaty of Paris of 1856 • Russia has a disadvantage because the Black Sea is now neutral territory • limited access to the Atlantic Ocean • England gained control of lands by using economic imperialism and creating spheres of influence • Britain and France takes advantage of Russia’s weakness to create spheres of influence throughout Europe

  6. Summary • Europeans and Russia wants access to quicker trade routes • Europeans also want natural resources in the area • Crimean War - Russia VS Ottoman Empire, France, and Britain • France and Britain are able to spread their spheres of influence after defeating Russia in the Crimean War

Different P.O.V • Europe - just wants the trade route and natural resources in the region • Middle East - upset about Europe using force to take control of their lands • Middle East - prefers the US’ less violent methods but is disappointed by their efforts • US - thinks they’re helping the Middle East • Middle East disappointed by US also
