Important organs in the urinary system

Important Organs In the Urinary System

Facts

  • The average bladder holds between 300ml and 600ml of urine. That’s similar to a can of fizzy drink or a pint of milk.

  • The main function of the bladder is to store and release waste in the form of urine.

  • The bladder is a stretchy, muscular bag that sits just behind the pubic bone.

  • The bladder is like a balloon and swells into a round shape when full and gets smaller when empty.

  • If the urinary system is healthy, urine may stay in the bladder for up to about 5 hours before excretion, depending on the amount of liquid consumed. We also obtain some fluid from food.

facts:

Urinary system

  • The average person passes approx. 1.5 litres to 2 litres of urine in 24 hours.

  • The muscle in the bladder wall is called the ‘detrusor’ muscle.

  • If muscles supporting the bladder are weakened, you may suffer from stress incontinence. You can help to strengthen these by doing pelvic floor exercises.

  • The inside of the bladder is covered with a urine-proof lining called the urothelium.

  • The bladder has tubes called ureters going into it and a tube called a urethra going out of it

Urinary system

  • A normal bladder completely empties every time you pass urine.

  • A normal bladder does not leak.

  • There are a number of things you can do to try and maintain a healthy bladder including: keeping a healthy fluid intake, avoiding constipation by following a healthy diet and doing pelvic floor exercises.
