Survey Overview • The Gallaudet University Campus Climate Survey was developed in 2007 in order to better understand, respond to, and monitor concerns of Gallaudet University employees regarding climate and campus strategies designed to improve climate. • The following survey analyzes six thematic areas: • Respect and Trust • Communication and Information Sharing • Management Style • Bilingualism • Academic Culture • Freedom of Expression • There were 345 administrators, faculty, staff, and professional staff who participated in the 2013 Campus Climate Survey. • This year there was a 42% response rate; the highest in five years. Faculty and professional staff have the highest response rate.

  3. Overall Key Findings • Best aspects about Gallaudet: Gallaudet employees highly rated the accessibility of events through ASL and English, supervisor receptiveness to input, the variety of communication means, and ongoing diversity programs. • Respondents further emphasized that they appreciate the campus community/collegiality, bilingualism on campus, emphasis on multiculturalism and diversity, and the academic environment. • Improvements for Gallaudet: Gallaudet employees were dissatisfied with the apparent favoritism in hiring practices on campus, lack of employee incentives and support (e.g., monetary raises and benefits), and the transparency of decision making and administrative policies.

  4. Key Findings – Climate Survey Subscales • Respect and Trust: The highest rated statement regarding Respect and Trust was the availability of ongoing diversity programs. The lowest rated statement was transparent/consistent communication. • Communication and Information Sharing: The highest rated statement regarding Communication and Information Sharing was the receptiveness of supervisors to input. The lowest rated statement was the upward flow of information. • Management Style: The highest rated statement regarding Management Style was the availability of clear ethical policies. The lowest rated statement was the idea that favoritism doesn’t occur.

  5. Key Findings – Climate Survey Subscales • Bilingualism: The highest rated statement regarding Bilingualism was the accessibility of events and meetings through both ASL and English. The lowest rated statement was the support of the budget for the bilingual mission. • Academic Culture: The highest rated statement regarding Academic Culture was that students receive appropriate accommodations. The lowest rated statement was that civil behavior is modeled and reinforced. • Freedom of Expression: The highest rated statement regarding Freedom of Expression was the receptiveness of supervisors to input. The lowest rated statement was that decision making is inclusive and transparent.

Key Findings – Climate Survey Subscales • For FIVE of the SIX Climate Survey Subscale scores Hearing employees’ ratings were statistically significantly higher than Deaf/Hard of Hearing employees ratings. • For the Academic Culture Subscale, Deaf/Hard of Hearing employees’ ratings were statistically significantly higher than Hearing employees’ ratings. • No other between group differences were statistically significant.
