  1. Kingdom Protista The most diverse kingdom

  2. Protist • The protist kingdom contains the most diverse collection of organisms.

  3. Protist • The one characteristics all protist share is that they are all eukaryotes. • Their cells have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. • List 5 organelles.

  4. Protist • Protists can be classified into 3 groups. • Animal-like: they are heterotrophs • Plant-like: they are autotrophic • Fungus-like: they are decomposers

  5. Protozoa • Animal-like protists are call protozoa • All are unicellular • All are heterotrophs • All are aquatic • Reproduce asexually • Protozoa:Enoploplastron triloricatum

  6. Protozoa • Classified by they way they move • Cilliates: protozoa covered by hairlike structures • Paramecium

  7. HeterotrophicDidinium eating a Paramecium

  8. Protozoa • Flagellates- use whiplike flagella to move

  9. Protozoa • Amoeba- move by sending out pseudopodia (false feet) and oozing around

  10. Protozoa • Sporazoans- produce spores • All are parasites • Plasmodium lives in mosquitos and causes malaria

  11. Algae • Plant-like protist are called algae • Both unicellular and multicellular • All are autotrophs

  12. Algae • Algae can be classified into six groups • The euglenoids, diatoms and dinoflagellates are all unicellular

  13. Algae • The multicellular algae can be classified as green, red, or brown

  14. Spyra Gyra

  15. Kelp

  16. Dynoflagellate

  17. Euglena with red eyspot

  18. Molds and Mildews • Fungus-like protists are the water molds, downy molds and slime molds

  19. Mold and Mildews • All molds and mildews are decomposers

  20. Mold and Mildews • Slime molds have the characteristics of both protozoans and fungus-like protists. • During part of their life cycle they are mobile.
