  3. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: 1. Students will be able to explain the importance of local, national and state-wide holidays. 2. Students will be able to create a poster identifying a holiday they celebrate with their family. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: 1. Students will be able to explain the significance of holidays celebrated locally, nationally, and within the state. Process/Skills: 1. Students will be able to create a poster to share about a holiday they celebrate at home or their favorite holiday. Values/Dispositions: 1. Students will be able to understand the importance of other holidays and why people celebrate, which will help them connect to people in history.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This lesson is important because students should be aware of why holidays are celebrated nationally, locally, or state-wide and what the significance is for each holiday.  Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards STATE GOAL 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations. Understand the development of significant political events. 16.B.1b (US)Explain why individuals, groups, issues and events are celebrated with local, state or national holidays or days of recognition (e.g., Lincoln’s Birthday, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Pulaski Day, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving). Logical/Mathematical • The students will brainstorm holidays that they know. • The students will share their list of holidays. • The teacher will narrow it down to these holidays: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, President’s Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day. • The class will watch the YouTube video about Thanksgiving to promote discussion afterwards. • The students will partner up and discuss what they know about these holidays. • Then, they will partner up and research one of the holidays and create a timeline of important events that led up to this holiday or significant events about the individual or group. • Materials Needed: • Computer • Notebook • Pencil • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8-GfZG-UW4

  8. Verbal/Linguistic • The students will share their timelines that they created on the holiday that was chosen. • The teacher will also have the students take notes of each of the holiday presentations.

Musical/Rhythmic • The students will read and listen to different poems written about the specific holidays discussed in class. • The students can share a favorite holiday song or poem. • Lastly, the students will share what their favorite holiday food is.   12. Visual/Spatial • The students will create their own poster of a holiday they celebrate at home or their favorite holiday. • The students must include pictures, background information, and how/why it is celebrated. • Materials Needed: • Posters • Coloring supplies • Computer

Body/Kinesthetic • The students will be placed in groups and they will present a short skit about the holiday that is assigned. • The skit should include significant events, why it is celebrated, how it is celebrated and is it a local, national, or in-state holiday. • The skit should be no longer than 5 minutes. • Materials Needed: • Anything needed for the skit (props)

  16. Interpersonal • The students will do a lot of group sharing and discussions about the holidays that are being taught in class. • There will also be a lot of group/partner activities.

Intrapersonal • The students will be researching a lot on the computer as well as using the resources in class to learn about the different holidays. • At the end of the lesson, the students will write a reflection about what they learned and how it has impacted them by learning about the different holidays and its importance.

  20. Naturalistic • Towards the end of the school year, the students will go to the Chicago History Museum. • The students will write a journal reflection about their experience and what they learned. • Materials Needed: • Pencil • Notebook
