    3. Nazarene Missions in the 50s and Nazarene Missions Today!

    4. Nazarene Missions International In 1952 the name of what is now NMI was changed from Women’s Foreign Missionary Society to Nazarene Foreign Missionary Society. Men were admitted to membership for the first time!

    5. In 1952 there were 38,994 Nazarenes in World Mission Areas As of 2009, the CON had 1,945,542 members …with 34% in the US and Canada, …and 66% in the rest of the world!

    6. In 1952, the CON was in 32 world areas, By 1959, we were in 38… To date, the CON has officially entered 156 world areas, with 12 more “unofficial.”

    7. In 1952, there were 301 Nazarene missionaries of the field. Presently, 938 Nazarene missionaries, 462 Career Missionaries and 476 Volunteer Missionaries come from 34 different countries…missionaries Do not necessarily need to speak English!

    8. Alabaster Offering The first Alabaster offering was in 1950 when $46,000 was received from CON. The East Tennessee District Alabaster Offering was $50,866 in 2010.

    9. Pioneers in the 50s Paul Orjala went to Haiti in 1950. We now have almost 500 churches in Haiti! William and Betty Sedat were in Guatemala in 1950. It took at least 50 years to translate the Bible into Poqamchi.

    11. 2011 Guatemala Connection The East Tennessee District NMI plans to build a church in Guatemala in February 2011. Let’s pray fervently, give generously, and consider going on this mission trip.

    12. Mission Education The first reading books for children appeared in 1957. In 1952, Helen Temple edited The Other Sheep, later World Mission Magazine. She went on to write more than 60 books for adults and children.

    13. Mission Communication We began the Spanish-language radio broadcast in 1953, the first “foreign” language Nazarene broadcast. In 1958, a Nazarene radio program was developed in Japan.

    14. Funding in the 50s The idea of local churches giving 10% to missions emerged in 1949. By 1952 there were three 10% districts. The new 5.5% formula is fair and easy to understand, and applies to every Nazarene church in the world.
