  2. How can we describe a government? • By how the power is distributed within the government • By the role the citizen plays in the government

  3. Power Distribution There are 3 main types of government that differ in how they distribute power: • Unitary Government • Federal Government • Confederate Government

  4. Unitary Government • The constitution gives sole power to the central government • Central government has the power to give or take powers from regional governments. • Examples: United Kingdom, France

  5. Federal Government • The constitution splits the power between the central government and regional governments • Certain duties are allocated to each level of government • Example: United States

  6. Confederate Government • Constitution gives power to regional governments • Central government is very weak • Example: Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union)

  7. Role of the Citizen Autocracy Oligarchy Democracy

  8. Autocracy • A form of government in which 1 person has absolute power • “self-ruler”

  9. Dictatorship Dictatorship – leader has absolute control over government and most aspects of citizens’ lives; not elected; abolishes all opposition Examples: Group – Nazi Germany, USSR, People’s Republic of China Single – Castro in Cuba

  10. Oligarchy • a form of government where most political power rests with a small segment of society (typically the most powerful) • “rule by the few”

  11. Democracy Democracy – power evenly distributed among the people; leaders are held accountable Direct Democracy – each person votes on every issue(not really feasible) Indirect Democracy – people are elected by citizen to run the government to best serve public interest

  12. Indirect Democracies Presidential System President elected by citizens Congress – bicameral House and Senate 3 separate branches Parliamentary System Prime Minister selected by legislature Parliament – bicameral H.Commons, H. Lords Leg. And Exe. combined
