  2. CONTENTS INTRODUCTION BENEFITS OF EXECUTION OF DESIRED IT SOLUTION IN FUNCTIONAL AREAS AREAS COVERED BY HIT (HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY) CURRENT STATUS OF HIT IN INDIA THE CHALLENGES FACED FOR ADOPTING HIT ADVANTAGE OF HEALTH IT FOR DIFFERENT CATAGORY

  3. INTRODUCTION The healthcare industry today after twenty five years, since computers started influencing our society, is standing at the threshold of a world of possibilities thrown up by technologies such as Virtual Reality, Cyber surgery, Micro - robotic Surgery and 3D image modeling. It is said that the Internet should be used for the benefit of mankind. A new generation of information systems and applications are currently being developed aimed at health care networks, physicians, health care managers and public health. The power of health care informatics is being realized and health  institutions are beginning to make large-scale commitments to information systems. This field has developed into a distinct entity and academic departments are being established to train medical informatics professionals.

  4. Benefits of execution of desired IT solution in functional areas • Processes laid down based on the hospitals policy and required customisation, as well as documented processes of IT would help in achieving the following benefits: • 1.Process of registration and retrieval of the details of any patient just a click away • 2.Improve in-patient revenue management • 3.Closely monitor parameters critical to hospital in-patient services • 4.Introduce transparency in billing payment collection • 5.Hospital administrators would be able to significantly improve the operational control

  5. AREAS COVERED BY HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 1. EMR/EHR/PHR all are one and same with little difference 2. Telemedicine 3. Digital health knowledge resource e.g. Digital Medical Library 4. Hospital Information management system 5. e-learning technologies and application in health Science 6. Biomedical informatics for biomedical research applications 7. Artificial Intelligence in clinical medicine and health management 8. Public health informatics 9. Medical Internet 10. Virtual Reality and Simulation for health

  6. Current Status of HIT in India Information Technology (IT) has immense potential to transform the healthcare sector in India in more ways than one. Though the need was recognised a lot earlier, the actual implementation - though in process now - has been slower than expected. According to the rating agency Fitch, the current size of the Indian healthcare industry is $65 billion and is expected to reach to $100 billion by 2015. Apart from the increase in population, which was one of the primary reasons for growth of the healthcare sector in India, factors like lower medical costs, increase in medical tourism have also contributed immensely to the boom. Despite India’s recent ascendancy as the hub of the IT and IT-enabled services industry powered by a vast pool of skilled manpower, it has lagged tremendously behind other countries in HIT adoption. Looking at the health scenario of India, the GDP spend on health is 0.9%, whereas the WHO recommends a 5% of GDP for health

  7. The challenges faced for adopting HIT • Government Funding:it has to be ensured that the number of trained medical informatics professionals increases. • Computer literacy: A high percentage of computer literacy among the government staff, and to a large extent in the private provider community should be one of the major objectives of the government. • Infrastructure and Coordination: improvement in the supporting infrastructure and coordination between public and private sector. • Legacy Systems: Except for a very few privately owned large hospitals, most patient records are paper based and very difficult to convert to electronic format. • Standards and Guidelines: Local HIT systems that do not adhere to common standards for information representation and exchange. However HL7 and DICOM standards have been under consideration in some countries including India.

  8. ADVANTAGE OF HEALTH IT FOR DIFFERENT CATEGORY Physician 1. Electronic medical records that facilitate the access to the medical record of a patient at anytime and place. 2. Clinical decision support systems / intelligent systems that assist in prescribing of medications, interpretations of lab results, to prepare a diagnosis , analize clinical decisions. 3. Telemedicine that provides the ability to attend to patients who are separated by distance and those who are unable to visit the physician.

  9. Patient • 1.Electronic personal health records that enable to store essential medical information. • 2.Telemedicine which connects patient with medical experts far away. • 3.Web sites that provide information on health, diseases and self-help. • 4.Online support groups specific for various health conditions. • Internet-based tools for disease management. • Researchers and Policy Makers • 1.Tools to collect, manage, store and analyze huge amount of data and translate it into effective information that can be used for planning and allocation of resources. • 2.Innovative methods and technologies that provide the ability to answer interesting and challenging research questions and explore new avenues for solving health problems.
