  1. The Quest for the Golden Rules 2nd Grade Miss Bondoc

  2. *Introduction* After reading and following along with the tape recording of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, know that it is more than just a story about Oompa Loompas & EverlastingGobstoppers....

  3. All of the characters in the story had qualities that represent a good and a bad citizen.

  4. Willy Wonka thought it was very important to have a responsible, honest, and trustworthy person running his factory full of sweets.

  5. He was scared to let just anyone into the factory because he thought someone might try to steal his wonderful recipes for the second time.

  6. *Essential Questions* What makes someone a good citizen? Why did Willy Wonka choose Charlie over the other children to run his factory?

  7. *Task* Charlie is an example of a good citizen. He is a little boy who gets rewarded for his good behavior, while his peers are punished for their bad behavior.

  8. Now that Charlie is in charge of the factory, he needs to decide who are good enough citizens to be allowed in. He also needs a set of rules that need to be followed once someone enters the factory.

  9. This is the busiest time of the year for Charlie, so he is asking for your help! First, you are going to gather information on the qualities that make someone a good citizen. Next, you are going to compare the good and bad traits of the characters in the story and report your results to the class. Lastly, you are going to organize the following information on a poster board: • a list of traits that make up a good citizen that people should have in order to enter his factory AND • a set of rules that everyone will need to follow once inside the factory.

  10. *Process* In order to help Charlie, first learn about what makes someone a good citizen. Look at the following website below to help you think about what people can do to become a good citizen. http://www.hud.gov/kids/

  11. Next, get into your groups of 5 people that I previously put you in and I will randomly assign you to one of the following characters from the book: Veruca SaltViolet Beauregarde

Reporting on: GOOD & BAD TRAITS Next, compare the good and bad traits of the characters in the story and report your results to the class: • Each person will get a “Good & Bad Traits” worksheet (this will be turned in for a grade) and you must title it with your character’s name. • Write down 3 good traits about your character and 3 bad traits about your character. • After everyone in your group is finished, you will act like one of the reporters in the book. I will provide you with a fake microphone and you will each present your good and bad traits for your character to the rest of the class.

Traits & Rules • Now, make a list of traits that make up a good citizen that people should have in order to enter Charlie’s factory. • These are very important because they will determine who will get to tour the chocolate factory. • Each person in your group should come up with 2 traits each. • Your group should have a total of 10 Traits. • In addition, each member of the group must come up with 2 rules each that everyone will need to follow once they enter Charlie’s factory. • Your group should have a total of 10 Rules.

  16. Finally, organize all 10 rules and all 10 traits using the crayons and poster board that I have provided. • Title it: “The Golden Rules For Entering Charlie’s Factory” • Be creative. • Each person in the group must also contribute a drawing on the poster board.

  17. After your poster board is finished, the entire group will come up in front of the class and present their results. • Each group member must: • share their 2 traits of a good citizen in which every person that enters the factory must have one of these traits • Share their 2 rules that every person must follow while in the factory & • tell the class why they feel both the traits and rules are important to have in the factory.

  18. *CONGRATULATIONS!!!!* Thanks to all of you Charlie now knows who he should and should not give his golden tickets to. He is thankful for “THE GOLDEN RULES FOR ENTERING CHARLIE’S FACTORY” that all of you have provided. You have learned about what it takes to be a good citizen and why it is important. How could you apply these rules everyday in and out of the classroom?

  19. *Expanding your knowledge* • Now that you are an expert on the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we will be watching the movie on Friday!! 

  20. Charlie would like to thank all of you again for your help by providing Willy Wonka snacks during the movie and I will be providing you with popcorn, juice, and milk! • He would also like to thank each and everyone one of you by presenting you with this….
