  6. Luke 22:39-46 39Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” • προσεύχομαι(proseuchomai) • Mark 1:35 • Romans 8:26 • Ephesians 6:18 • James 5:13 • 1 Thess. 5:17 • 2 Thess. 3:1 • 1 Timothy 2:8

  7. Luke 22:39-46 39Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Praythat you may not enter into temptation.” • προσεύχομαι • πειρασμός(peirasmos) • examination to learn the true nature or character of (James 1:2; 1 Pet. 4:12) • a test intended to make one stumble (Lk 4:13; Acts 15:26)

  8. Luke 22:39-46 41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” • βούλομαι(boulomai) • desire, wish, implying planning and the invocation of the will (Ac 25:22; Php1:12) • θέλημα(thelēma) • will or desire (1 Peter 4:2)

  9. Luke 22:39-46 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. • ἐνισχύω(enischuō) • Acts 19:20-So the word of God grew mightily and prevailed • ἐκτενής(ektenēs) • 1 Peter 4:8, “…have fervent love for one another…” • Acts 12:5, “Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer…”

  10. Luke 22:39-46 45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.” • λύπη(lypē) • state of mental pain and anxiety • 2 Cor. 9:7 …let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly… • 2 Cor. 2:7 …forgive and comfort, lest…be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

  11. What Should We Pray About? • Spiritual Protection • “Pray that you may not enter into temptation” • Physical and Emotional Provision • “if it is Your Will, take this cup from Me” • “being in agony, He prayed more earnestly…sweat became like great drops of blood” • “found them sleeping from sorrow” • God’s Will to Be Done • “Your will…not My will, but Yours, be done”

  12. Why Should We Pray? • God is our Father • 1 John 5:13 “…you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…” • God Hears Our Prayers • 1 John 5:14 “…if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us…” • God Answers Our Prayers • 1 John 5:15 “And if we know that Hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him”

  13. What Keeps us from Praying? Emotional and physical exhaustion-sleeping from sorrow Over commitment to other activities-I’m just too busy to pray right now Unconfessed Sin in our lives Spiritual Apathy Self-Dependence-I can do it on my own Past “unanswered” prayers Boring-I’m easily distracted Prayer is Hard Work

  14. Luke 11:9–13 9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
