  1. USDA VIVO Melanie Gardner USDA, NAL Manager, Innovation & Collaboration NAL Digital Repository, AgNIC, VIVO March 25, 2011

  2. USDA Effort • Desire for VIVO started with AgNIC – last May • 60+ institutions • USDA exploring at same time • NAL Director volunteered to support USDA effort • USDA began with core science agencies – • Agricultural Research Service • Forest Service • National Agricultural Statistics Service • Economic Research Service • National Institute for Food & Agriculture

  3. Challenges • Two years into new administration • Reorganizations underway • Each agency is [fairly/mostly] independent of all others but grouped under “mission areas” for those with similar missions • No central HR system • No consistent tracking of research, except ARS • Approximately 50,000 researchers & scientists in USDA • USDA wants better exposure of science they do and networking among scientists

  4. Status • One IT person – established an agreement with Cornell to help • VIVO current version installed • Have all 5 agencies organizational structure [needs slight modifications] • Have two agency’s “people” data in • Still behind the firewall • Awaiting 3 other agencies people data • Other science agencies are asking to join • Have a USDA VIVO Board – high-level “champions” and include UF and Cornell participants with ARS lead – Sharon Drumm • Have USDA Technical Team – representatives from each participating agency - determining the data sources • Includes UF and Cornell participants
