  1. Sacraments What do we really need to know?

  2. 1. What is a Sacrament? The Latin word sacramentum means "a sign of the sacred." Sacraments are at the same time signs and instruments of God's grace.

  3. 2. How many Sacraments are there? Officially, there are seven Sacraments that areritualised and celebrated: • Baptism • Confirmation • Eucharist • Penance • Anointing of the Sick • Holy Orders • Marriage

  4. 3. Are there any ‘unofficial’ sacraments? Our lives are filled with countless ‘sacramental moments’, which happen every time we are drawn into remembering the presence of God in our lives.

  5. 4. Are Sacraments about celebrating the presence of God in our lives? Sacraments are celebrations of Christian tradition, of Christian life and of Christian hope. They share the dimensions of past, present and future that give ordinary celebrations meaning.

  6. 5. What do the Sacraments celebrate? • Sacraments celebrate good human experiences: belonging, healing, commitment • Sacraments celebrate the Christian story (each Sacrament has a foundation in the life and ministry of Jesus) • Sacraments celebrate the life of the community • Sacraments celebrate the Kingdom of God PAST PRESENTFUTURE

  7. 6. How do Sacraments have multidimensional meanings? “A sacrament's meaning is multidimensional because it points to three different time dimensions: past, present and future. A sacrament also has multiple levels of depth because it can be personally meaningful for an individual at one level, it can have a shared meaning for a particular group at another level, it can have a general meaning for the whole Church at yet a third level”. Dr Joseph Martos
