  3. METABOLISM • Noun • The process through which an organism changes food into energy. • As Ellen’s diet changed, her metabolism changed too.

  4. METAMORPHOSIS • Noun • Change in form; transformation. • After several weeks, the tadpole’s metamorphosis into a frog was complete.

  5. METAPHORICAL • Adjective • Symbolic rather than literal. • Mr. DeMarco had a hard time explaining to his class that they were not going on a real field trip, but a metaphorical one.

  6. AL “other, another”

  7. INALIENABLE • Adjective • Not able to be taken away. • Although Michelle seems to think it’s her inalienable right to interrupt people, few friends agree with her.

  8. ALIENATE • Verb • To make hostile. • Alison alienated her party guests by forcing them to discuss subjects they knew nothing about.

  9. ALIAS • Noun • A name that is not one’s true name. • Following his testimony in a high-profile murder case, Jason Ryan assumed the alias “Steven Berger.”

  11. ALTERATION • Noun • A change or modification. • Any alteration in the plans at this point will force us to design an entirely new schedule.

  15. SIMULATE • Verb • To mimic; imitate. • The ride at the amusement park claims to simulate the experience of zero gravity.

  16. DISSEMBLE • Verb • To conceal the truth; to deceive. • Rather than dissembling when asked if he took the money, Clayton confessed to everything.

  17. SEMBLANCE • Noun • Rough likeness. • My mother demanded that I get my room into some semblance of order before our relatives came to visit.
