  1. Antennas Tim Morgan

  2. Overview • Goal • Simulations using ADS • Coplanar Waveguide • Monopole Antenna • Split Ring Resonators • Fabrication & Testing • Future • Travels

  3. Goal • GPS application • Antenna Specifications • Multiple frequency (1.575 & 1.227 GHz) • Coplanar Waveguide • Split Ring Resonators • Tunability

  4. The Product SRR Monopole Antenna 47 mm Coplanar Waveguide

  5. Coplanar Waveguide • Feed mechanism to monopole antenna • Benefit: easy fabrication – one side of substrate • Design • Started with impedance desired for network matching • Substrate thickness • Gaps & Conductor thickness ratios

  6. Monopole Antenna • Primary frequency: 1.575 GHz • Design • Frequency: λ/4 • Impedance matching to CPW • Set same width as center conductor

  7. Split Ring Resonators • Secondary Frequency: 1.227 GHz • Design: • No standard design equations • Scaled published SRR dimensions by ratio • Simulated to find best placement and orientation

  8. Final Simulations

  9. Fabrication & Testing • Standard photolithography • FR4 substrate (dielectric of 4.4) 1.6 mm thick • Added 2nd order Hilbert Curve • Preliminary Tests • Both frequencies, but not the desired bandwidth

  10. Future • Understand why real result didn’t match simulation • Improve design with feedback from Dr Varadan

  11. India

  12. Iron Pillar • 1600 years old with little to no rust • protective coating developed in the 5th century to prevent oxidation • 3 layer protection
